wondering if anyone had any pics of a chopped and or lowered 51 ford f-1 so i can get some different ideas and different perspectives and also the cheapest way to lower my pickup
Start here. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=118980 Then go here.. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=76069 Then here.. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=138866 Should give you some ideas to start with. Hoof has one he's working on that he's channeled 6 inches, good way to lower with losing the suspension. Someone else on here is working on one with a Z'd frame (sorry lost the name) Old Beet and family have a couple with serious roof chops. Yet someone else has an altered dragster being built around the cab from one. I am working on one thats on a late model chasssis with all Ford running gear. Chopped and channeled. You could use a modded axle and put the rear axle over the springs / c notch etc. Poke around ! I am sure you'll find plenty more I've forgotten.
Plymouth Volare front suspension, 302, Toploader, 9inch. It has chassis engineering rear suspension. its a '48 with '51 front sheet metal, but you get the idea.
Why not post some pictures of your starting point in one of those pictures threads. May as well resurect an existing one...
I'll put up pic in the next few days ,thinking about useing a stock axle with 4in drop spindles and lowering blocks and reversed leaf springs in the rear.the motor is going to be a 351 w ford motor .what kind of trans would be best thank for the info
what about a T bird or Lincoln Mark 8 IRS rear... either with springs or airbags? http://www.truckIRS.com
My shop truck. Rescued it from being a "street Rod". Chopped 3 1/2". 327 Chevy, 4 speed, 12 bolt posi w/4.11's.
My 52. 76 Chrysler Cordoba torsion bar front on a Gibbon crossmember. Gibbon rear springs and hangers. Dropped it about 4".
Theres not a single picture of a 48 grille on this thread yet, they're all 51/52's Do you mean the big teeth ? Thats a 51/52 . The earlier ones have the horizontal slat grille. Here is where I keep all my 48-52 pictures - I've been collecting a while. http://picasaweb.google.com/stragedy/48To52F1S
I didn't chop my cab because I am chickenshit, but the more pics I see I like them with the cab left full height. I do like to see the "forehead" over the windshield removed though. Nothing easier than channeling 6" over the frame. So many things just fell into place it is like ole Henry intended for it to work. CHAZ
Hoofs channel came out very nicely, get him to send you the pics if you're interested - really opened my eyes up to doing it. Of course I am only going three inches and I'm not on a stock frame, but it should be easy enough (fingers crossed) Hoof, I think they look best with a little chop, somewhere between two to thre and a half but not more - OldBeet and Kmembers trucks are the only ones I've seen with biggers chops that i still like. I think Oldbeets is 5 inches ? Hoof, mine has has the roof panel stretched at the same time the chop was done, I am still undecided if I like it more or less, but it's done now ! Did you ever get your fender clearance issue sorted out ?
Wow, thanks man, we quartered them to keep that nice factory shape. I sure wish I would have channeled mine. Got me thinking if I did channel one, I would drop the cab onto the running boards which is about 4" and then relocate the core support 2" higher to lower the front sheet metal and then a guy would only have to pancake the hood 2" istead of 4". I think that would look pretty cool with a 4" chop.
Heres my 50 Volare clip 5" chop, 4" chop of windshield to lose the "forehead" Crowned roof with 40 Merc skin 3 and 1/2" channel and on and on I keep having more ideas so it will probably never be done
Tony, I'd love to see some more pictures of your truck if you got some. If you don't want to post them you can email me them direct and I'll put them in my collection.
I think that a lot of my clearance problem came from the tall stock tires and rims that I can't use anyway(disc brakes), and I had the nose down too far when I mocked it up. I think that once I get the doghouse sitting plumb with the cab I will have a little more clearance. I may have even had the cab sitting nose down on the frame a little making it even worse. Time will tell, I just might have to mess around with wheel choices until I get something that works. I am not getting much done on the truck right now because I just got a car to work on. When I started the truck there were three of us, now there are four of us, so I needed something with a back seat. CHAZ
