Congratulations to local boy Brian Sorensen for making the cover of this month's (Subscriber cover) Rodder's Journal! I know personally how much time and effort was put into making this car shine.

It's nice to see a Swindler ***ociated car in Rodder's Journal...the cream of the crop of Hot Rod magazines....

The magazine is at the news stands now. Really cool car, with a really cool story behind it. (And an in print quote from me) ha ha!

hmm, that is a pretty sweet looking car. I might need to pick that up and check it out. really nice color and I like the fenders - grill is beautiful too, lights, louvers.....heck, I don't see anything about it I don't like yet.

Very deserving write up. I'll never forget the first time I saw that car boiling the hides. No prisoners, thank you very much......

I love the fact that that the best "magazine" in the business isn't afraid to put a primered car on it's cover.

Noticed the Jalopy Journal ad & a mention of the HAMB Alliance in there too.

    Looks like another good issue.

I guess I'll have to mosey over to the bookstore and pick this up tomorrow. The funny thing is that I'm a subscriber. I guess posts about this mags atrocious customer service are as old as posts about Marty at NW Speed, but it still irks me that the woman drops $50 a year (every christmas) on a magazine that I end up having to buy at the store to avoid missing. Oh well, even at $30 an issue, it's still a better value than grabbing Hot Rod at the grocery store...

I've never had an issue not arrive.

Why not just wait for it to arrive? Hot rodders, if anyone, should have that much patience. Nothing we do happens in a hurry.

  10. Love that 34! That is the subscribers cover. The newstand cover is a studio frontal shot of the Mondello/ Matsubara Fiat altered. A truly stunning cover, one of the best car mag' covers ever seen! Rodders Journal rules!

Kev, The Mondello & Matsubara altered was not shot in a studio. It was shot outside running on nitro.

  12. Awesome, Dragnut told me you could hear it all over Burbank when they shot that:D.

Ya, We fired that ****er up 9 times that night. If you know the Burbank area, Steve and Geoff were shooting a car at the Castaways at dusk. Our shoot was near Alameda and the 5 frwy in that industrial area. We did a warm up and after we shut it off, we get a phone call from Geoff saying "would you keep the noise down". We couldn't believe that it heard it all the way up there. The police came by because we tripped an alarm in the area, and they stuck around to watch. Even Keith Wessner showed up.

  14. That's the subscriber cover? Weird....I bought my copy last week and it looks just like that (no way I'd ever subscribe to a magazine!). I haven't even broken it out of the plastic cover yet though....need me some free time.

  15. Congrats to Pete, Karpo, and Derek for the Mondello/Matsubara cover shot version.Pure gold with those candles all lit! Sometimes I swear this issue is leaving nitro stains on my coffee table. Can only see his eyes, but one would guess Karpo is all smiles behind that Simpson mask. Again, not enough can be said as to how *****en and spot on this car turned out. You guys should be proud of resurrecting and preserving an icon from the golden age of drag racing.

    Dragnut,

Thanks for the kind words. Hey are you the same guy that was asking Derek this week about the googles?

An excellent issue fer sure. Check out page 151 [page numbers stop at 148 and pick up again on page 158] for a great full page ad for.....you guessed it...the Jalopy Journal. Our very own HAMB.
Sorchik has a nice writeup and interview too.

Got my issue today in the mail, *****in'. I was forewarned by Karpo, though... nice plug for the Awful Awful site in the Mondello article. And nice stuff throughout the mag. Good to see the piece on Lance Sorchik, always dug his stuff (and Rodder Digest), and as alway the rest of the mag ...great.

See y'all at the March Meet. Karpo, don't forget!

Peddro, we get both versions out here and you can take your pick. Larry may have only had one version at Ballarat tho.

It's not primered. It's paint. I don't remember the exact color he told me, but it is paint.

actually, if you look close you can see the reflection of the paint gloss on the hood, etc. still think it is a beautiful car and color no matter what and even better if it is the finished paint. if that is primer, it is some damn good looking primer.

    Just to clarify...

I didn't mention the "primer" as a slam on the car. I love the car & I love the fact that TRJ put it on it's cover.

Whether it is primed or painted, the car is a stunner. Gloss red would have killed it. The color & finish is perfect.

It's a PPG basecoat without the clear. According to the article it matches his wife's toenails :D. Beautiful car with an amazing history -- especially the guard rail incident. I really dug the fact that it has gl*** fenders. It's refreshing to see a publication like TRJ honor a car that came together so well, no matter what path the builder folllowed.

IMHO one of the knockout cars of the issue is in a little photo at the end of the Lance article: the "Jersey Suede" coupe. Now THAT's a hot rod.
