I just completed shipping a 4-71 blower to a HAMB member in Germany. I'll have to say I'm glad I don't live anywhere but the good old US and have to buy parts. UPS and Fedex were $377 each , Post Office about $200 so I thought we had a smoken' deal with BaxGlobal for $150. Got the money and packed it up and sent it to the office. I was really impressed with the security and help that I got from the Bax office and watched my tracking as the blower went across the world. I got a message from my customer in Germany that he was happy with the blower but he had to pay an additional $250 to the office when he picked it up.
I called the Bax rep which is a great gal and she filled me in on what happens in international shipping. Countrys charge taxes and duties for imports when they arrive. The amounts can be quoted before shipping in advance if you know what to ask. I guess what I'm trying to say is never ***ume when your shipping overseas.

i do a lot of shipping overseas. i make sure i check the gift box on the custom forms. if you do that then they do not have to pay tax on the item. if its like a huge box or something really major i will give them a severely reduced value on the package so the taxes arent as much.

I am just learning this overseas stuff.
A fellow from New Zealand asked for shipping cost to ship a 1934 hood.
UPS 387.00 USPS 200.00 and it goes on and on.
Hell the shipping is more than the part cost.
I could not afford to build these things at that rate.
How do they do it?? I know the dollar is weak now but that is just nuts.

not such a good idea when that rare expensive part goes lost in transit and all you can claim is the reduced value you stated.

  5. I used Bax Global to ship $7K worth of late model parts to Kuwait, best quote by like 1/2 the price of everyone else.

yeh and then if the parts are over US$250 Customs smacks us another 12.5%.

    + petrol is $US6 a gallon here !

But you know what pisses us the most - is when people won't ship overseas. So thanks for making the effort - we know it's a bit more h***le selling/shipping overseas, but when we find that part that just isn't available in our country we do appreciate it (regardless of the cost!).

Yes the duties payable can/do. make your eyes water....but what really gets me is the 17.5% tax that is charged on the price of the item plus the shipping costs and "the handling fee"?? it usually puts another 25% onto the total when they`ve all had a bite...so that $100 part ends up costing $100 plus whatever shipping plus approx 25% of the combined total......

I`d like to add my thanks also, to you guys that take the time to sell sell to us foriegners, I `preciate it.

Robster...I wish our petrol was that cheap lol....it`s around $10 a gallon now and seems to go up every couple of weeks.

In the UK car parts are usually 5% import duty on the cost of the item & shipping.. but then you have to pay VAT (sales tax @ 17.5%) so say an item is $200 + $50 shipping..

    $250 + 5% = $262.50
    $262.50 + 17.5% = $308.44

There are a few people here who are doing regular shipments of stuff, so you buy something, get it sent to their US address, they then import a container full of stuff and split the cost out between everyone, works out pretty good.

you guys just be glad we don't add on a "selling our nations good **** to foreigners" tax on our end!:D

all in fun of course, you gotta respect the dedication you guys have to pay the price you do to build the american iron overseas.

the real smart guys are the ones i bump into at even little swap meets buying all the good **** they can get their hands on to ship by the container full back to their respective countries.

Most of the EU charges .05% if they understand that the item is an antique or collectible.......

If you call it the wrong thing you can be looking at 53% here to me.

You can tell the truth just make sure what you call the item!

There is frequently a maximum value on "Gifts".
Over that number, you pay taxes on the whole amount.

And if they open your package and don't agree with
the declared value, you pay taxes on the value they ***ign.

Some Courier companies also charge "Brokerage Fees"
for doing the paper work to get your parts through Customs.
It was $50+,minimum charge up here.Probably more now.
    ****s on a small package.

They also collect Duty and Taxes, which may or may not be owed.
UPS tried to collect 20% Duty on a shipment that was Duty Free.
Luckily,I had done my research, and was able to quote the
    info from Canada Customs.

Packages under $40 used to go through the mail without them collecting taxes.Just received a package,$4 in tax,$8 handling fee.
So my $25 plus shipping purchase, cost over $40.

even if the item is marked as a gift you still get charged, ANYTHING that comes in to the UK and is worth more than £7 or $14 we get charged DUTY and anything more than £18 or $36 will get charged Import VAT.

what pisses me off is we get chrged DUTY/VAT on a service(postage) we dont buy in this country - never figured out how that works. surely when you get a quote from the PO that should be the price of the goods delivered to your door? instead when the postman gets to the door he asks for roughly another 25%

when buying items i check the price on the USPS web site as its got a pretty good calculator on it - however some POs in the states charge more than the calculator shows - never figured that out? i guess the ones which charge more are franchises and are not actual POs??

Post Office prices vary considerably here.
Even at a given Post Office,it depends on who is behind the counter.

A quote for shipping is just that. The cost of Shipping.
Brokerage fees,Duty,Taxes,Blablabla are out of t
he control of the shipper. They don't get to keep
the taxes they legally have to collect.

    I guess its not a ******* contest.

But here in Sweden we have to pay 6% custom+ 25% Salestax on the whole cost including Shipping.

If the value is below 40$ you ussually get a way with nothing extra. But he Custom guys are not stupid and can read, so most if the time i ask to have the value of the package set to 50% of the real value.

    Recently bought a rebuilt generator on EGAY 175$ + an regulator 45$ Shipping 135$ = 355$
Then i had to pay Sales tax and Custom another 115$

Still its worth every Cent :)

But most of the time i send the stuff to my friend in CA, and get it sent in a container twice a year, together with other guys stuff

And yes it has become much cheaper lately :)

  18. Yeh.its easy for your eyeballs to explode when you see some of the great cars or parts available in the U.S. and you can be ****ered in like a fish on a line.In England we always take it that the dollar value as the pound value,so what looked half price over there has suddenly got all sorts of taxes and stuff when it lands.I dived in when 2 dollars was 1 pound, eureka! When the parts arrived,God knows who,had set the exchange rate to a worse figure for commision.......pick the bones out of that, muppet!

......and thats AFTER we've already paid TOP price without haggling in the US.

Hence, the thread here a while back about 'all those vermen furriners STEALING our good stuff' kinda pissed me off!

hi garryr ,I'm reading into your initial post that you feel responsible for not giving the guy the right shipping price ,but you cant ***ume the responsability of taxes and duties for another country ,all you can do is find them the best deal on shipping ,as items I've sent to australia thru the mail etc have been taxed some times and not others ,it's a hit and miss deal, so feel good that you saved the guy some money on shipping , BC
