well i picked up this truck for $100, missing the bed with the rear fenders and tranny/motor. cab is perfect, no rust anywhere. got the runningboards, front bumper, two hoods, grill, drive shaft. well pretty much everything, all i need is rewiring and new drivetrain. only problem is i couldnt figure out if it was a 1/2 ton or 3/4 or what, cab looks a little big to me, first truck i'm gonna build so i was wondering if you guys could figure it out. didnt take pics but here is one they sent me....
Get the VIN off of the tag that should be on the inside driver's door post. The numbers on your paper don't make any sense to me. http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/vin/vinbuster.html This will tell you. I see 3600 on the one sheet so that would be 3/4 ton. Same cab and fenders either way just 3600 was a long bed if it had a bed. 6 lug usually indicates 3100 (1/2) and 8 lug 3600 (3/4) and 3800 (1 ton).
Cab size is same on 1/2 and 3/4. From the angle of the pic you provided it looks like a 1/2 but you can measure from front wheel to rear wheel to determine. If you can provide a better side shot, I might be able to tell. Good point Danimal on the 3600 designation and the lug counts...
Thanks Big T. If they'd only moved a bit around to see the wheels... I tried adding the 52 to the front of the KBA... thing and it came up with unknown cubic inches and unknown wheelbase. Dropping the 5 made it a '62, and dropping the 52 completely made it unknown all the way through. I think you'll be needing to get some type of documentation on this truck that corresponds to some code somewhere on the truck. Would they have used the engine for that code? I didn't try Inliners.org but that would be the next place to go.
I wonder if the KB is a typo and it should be KT or KR... Check out http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/series.htm
...you've got a 1/2 ton chassis; 1/2 tons have the leaf springs under the framerail like yours; 3/4 tons and larger had the rear springs mounted to the outside of the framerail. To me it looks like you have 1/2 ton front sheetmetal and it seems to match paint-wise; so I'd say you have a 1/2 ton truck but the title numbers don't match the 1/2 ton numbers. The no's on the paperwork could be engine no's as a lot of states used engine no's for the I.D. no. years ago.
Good catch, Rusty. I knew there was something different about the frames but I ditched the 3/4 ton frame from mine years ago because it was ass ended. It is on an S10 frame now. The front sheetmetal from a 1/2-1 ton was the same as far as I know. I don't think the fenders were opened up for the bigger tires until they got to 1 1/2 ton and that was a bunch wider. I also suspect engine numbers were used. Don't know what Cali does about that if you change the engine.
all the cabs are the same. 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton have some front sheetmetal. the one ton and up front sheetmetal looks the same but, it is longer and has bigger wheel openings. even the grille is bigger. i just parted a few of these out and these were the differences that i noticed.
all cabs are the same except for the COE's.. fenders are the same from 1/2ton(3100) to 1 ton(3800). and if you look they used the motor number for the serial number(VIN)..joe
Not sure but the 1/2 ton frame rails are spread wider in the rear than the front. The 3/4 ton frame rails are the spread the same width front and rear. Rusty is correct on the rear spring setup also.
...you are correct; all up to and including 1 tons use the same front sheetmetal; which is good to know for us Chev/GMC guys. ...I've messed with these Ad trucks for over 30 years and I'm still learnin stuff.
when in doubt here is good site for 1929 through 1959 chevy cars & trucks. It has specs on just about EVERYTHING...joe
thanks guys, i should be picking it up either later on today or tomorrow. the plans for it are to get a 350 sbc in there for reliability since the trip to work is 150miles round trip. then just get the bed and probably go for a two tone grey color. probably throw airbags in the rear with grey steelies with spider caps. or so i think. haha edit: also, they gave me 1 black plate, i guess who ever took the bed with the rear bumper decided to take one plate, can i get one made and take it as if i have the pair?
