I've seen it in person...It's a cool car, but not $750 large cool...It's basically an unrestored car...little nicks and scratches, but that's what makes it cool!

This is confusing. I saw an interview with Edsel Ford, the grandson, on Car Crazy where he said that he would like to buy this car for the Ford family collection but it was doubtful that it would ever be for sale by the currant owner. But if it was he would be there. Then there was an interview with one of the RM auction guys on Motor Trend Radio and he said that it was going to be in the Amelia Island Councours Auction. < http://www.rmauctions.com/FeatureCars.cfm?SaleCode=AM08&CarID=r115 > Now it's on Ebay a week before the auction. This is strange.

Nothing strange about it. The owner of the car is looking to get the maximum for that car, meaning making Ford pay huge money for it.
The estimate is so high because they know that Ford has the money and the desire.

That guy is selling some nice cars.....and very expensive. It looks like all those cars came from a museum.

If you look at the ebay sellers name it is rm auctions. I guess they are going to do a live bid via ebay too. Looks like ebay will make some nice money on this too.

I hope the Speedster goes back to the Family and loved reading about it in the Rodders Journal.

In the very early 50s, before I ever had a car, maybe 16 or so, (I'm 70), I earned my pocket money cutting other folk's gr***. One of the yards I cut was a widow who was what people here in the South call "old money". One day, seeking respite from the hot GA sun, I ventured into the open door of the garage out back for a break. Over to the side, visible only from inside the garage was a roadster like no other car I had ever seen. It was this car! It was in rough shape, tires dry rotted and flat, rusted out headers, age cracks in the upholstery, and I remember it had cable actuated mechanical brakes.
Inquiring about the car, the widow told me it belonged to her son, and it hadn't been driven in several years.
He lived nearby, and I asked him about the car, was told much the same story told on ebay. He was willing to sell it to me for $1500!
That was like $150,000 today to me back then. I earned $1.50 per hr. cutting gr*** with my own power mower( they were rare back then, and expensive as all hell back then in 50s Dollars). Subtract $.50 per hour for gas, oil, repairs, and paying for the mower out of what I earned, it would have taken all my money for about 1500 hrs. work to pay for it! Add in the cost of tires, battery, and repairs needed before use , and it was an impossible dream.
Eventually the guy traded it in on a Corvette, '56 IIRC. Last I had heard of it except rumors from other local gearheads, was when Downing Motors in Atlanta had it listed in their adverti*****t for sale. Ad said it now had a SBC. Downing was a dealer who specialized in unusual cars, and their ads I always read.
Amazing to see it resurface after all these years, and with ******* Barrett-Jackson on TV, I'm not surprised at the starting bid asked. Those ****ing people at BJ (good term for them, huh?) have killed all chances of finding old and unusual cars at any kind of reasonable price!

I have some photos somewhere of the car when it was displayed at the
"Lake Mirror Cl***ic" here in FL a couple years back.
The car is for sure a survivor and it looked like alot of standard Ford parts were used on the drivetrain.
My understanding is the guy who runs the Amelia Island "concours" is the current owner.

That price and their (estimated selling price) are probably pie in the sky but with that car's history it will probably go pretty high.

I agree it with Jarzenhotrods it looks like RM is going for max exposure on their auction.

Thanks for the detail photos 56 Sedan I see ideas that will work on a project I have going.

22. Highlander,

A standing shot of the car from the front back that shows the curve of the lower body and ANY pics of the of the ch***is modifications (stretched front suspension and the flipped rear) would be AWESOME!

Thanks, Bill

Over on Hemmings and the AACA forums they are pooh-poohing this car, because of some "modification" done by a guy back in the 60's.
I say it's historic even with mods, and Edsel did own it.
The guy brought real style to Ford in spite of the old man.
Personally, I'd love to have the car.

The ad says the live auction in March 8. This is the same thing RM did with the Sweigart collection at Hershey, previewed the cars on Ebay and had a live sale.

25. What caught my attention (in addition to the huge price) was the 13% "buyers premium" -- never heard of that before. So, you bid $1,000,000 on a car and think that that is t he price, and then some middle man comes around and says "Oh, like you need to give me an extra $130k" -- what's up with that? At least with home sales, the buyer pays for that out of the proceeds.

Interesting car, though...

I had that issue of SIA for years but lost it in a move. I always liked the renderings as well. What an incredible piece of history. Mac Yankee, I'll do my best. I know a lot of ppl surrounding that car so I hope it helps. Will post here and it's own post when I return.

Buyers premium is standard at all car auctions. RM, Kruse, Gooding, everybody has them. RM is usually 5% on the sellers side and 10% on the buyers. When you bid 1 million, you need to keep in mind that you are actually bidding 1.130 million. You get the hang of it pretty quick.

Also, RM rarely screws up the estimate very badly. They are very wired in with the high end buyers and I'm sure they already have a few on the hook. It will only take 2 to get the car way way up there.
