I have a non-computer pal who's building a '29 Ford 2-door sedan. He wants a steel roof on it and is wondering what newer car roof tin he can use that will fit the '29's contours best. Anybody done this ? TIA !!
i build the comp***, and caliber new cars, in illinois and the roof of one of these would look so cool on a sedan. the roofs even have ribs if you want them.
Hey, In the past, the roof panels from big station wagons worked out well. Sadly, most of these have been crushed. Perhaps, a mini van roof panel, either with the ribs or without, if he dosen't want that "street rod" look would work out. The Camaro/Firechicken roof panels have been used on the ABomb coupes, but not large enough for a sedan. S****ey Devils C.C. "Meanwhile, back aboard The Tainted Pork"
Late 90's Jeep Cherokee 4dr's have ribbed rooves that might work? They're plentiful and cheap to be had.
I used a roof skin out of a late 70s Volare or Aspen wagon ( i think it was a 78) I wanted a smooth roof and tho it has ribs when you see it, they are just screwed to the roof, a few holes to fill but matches the roof contour increibly. If you were to make a template and set it on the wagon, it wont match, but when you cut it out it will lay perfectly on the sedan. I was skeptical at first but it couldnt have fit better. Must remember that it fits on backwards.
I used a section of a 68/69 tempest on a 30 cpe. that laid on real nice, but i'm not sure for sedan? worth a look. Also 68 Chevy P/u is a perfect fit backwards for 33-34 cpe. Take a look at Suburban for sedan???
Mine is an 01 Mazda Millenia minivan. The ribs are a bit street rodderish, but with the flames, you don't really see em. -Abone.
'80s Malibu wagon, without roof rack, fits. Has 5 ribs. Early 90s Volvo wagon roof is smooth.About the right size.
We used the roof out of a chevy full size van on a 27 T. It had cool ribs that ran the full length. It did take a little modification to the front and back of the T roof to fit right.
If you find the perfect top off of a late model, check with a local body shop before you spend time cutting one off at the junkyard. some of those skins are very inexpensive.....
A good ten years ago my brother and I used a 68-72 Suburban roof in a '29 sedan. It had the perfect side to side curve but was a little flat front to back. We had to make a couple of slices in the sides to get it to lay flat without buckling. It was smooth with no ribs.
This roof is off of a 80 olds wagon. This would be the same roof from 78-81 or so Malibu, buick, or pontiac wagon.
Mine was filled with a roof from a 95 Astro van. I cut it larger then needed, placed it over the sedan and traced the outline I needed from the inside. I even used the van bracing. Worked great!!!
