Just got confirmation that the Green Mamba jet drag car will be making an appearance at Billetproof Florida, March 22, 2008 at the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing. WAY cool. It will be static display only... sorry, no roasting cars on Don's front lawn.
I saw the Mamba a few years ago at the Lebanon Valley Speedway. They backed it up to an old demo derby car and burned it down.Chunks of burning steel were blowing off the car and into the infield...it was quite the spectacle.
I had the chance to start that Winnie Roaster back in the early 80's at few tracks when we match racing our FC and Doug was there.
Now days when you go to a Fair they have fried everything. With the Mamba going to be there and Chicken Salad? New Idea, I don't know just a thought. "Fried Chicken Salad"
Way cool!!!! While I was never a big fan of jet cars, I always enjoyed seeing Doug race the Green Mamba back when he was a regular at the World Series of Drag Racing at Cordova Dragway, during the late 70s and early 80s.... Seems like the car was always louder and faster than it's competition and even back then there was already an air of nostalgia about it!
The Green Mamba was part of my first introduction to all this when I was an 8 year old kid in 1978 at Great Lakes Drag-o-way. I remember the announcer saying "the Green Mamba is the deadliest snake in the WORLD!" Since that day, I was never the same. That day is DIRECTLY responsible for everything I have and am right now...my career, my business, my wife and Boy Wonder all came from that day in '78. What a trip it will be to see that car! -Brad
I'd like to know that too. The car was stolen and dissmantled two years ago and we're still looking for it.
no need to keep looking http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=148217&highlight=Green+Mamba http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=171321&highlight=Green+Mamba http://www.savethemamba.org/ also, it can be seen at the Billetproof show, the owner and Ted, who rebuilt it after it was chopped up, will be at the show.
I think if you let him know there will be beer there, he'll come! I remember him standing on the Green Mamba holding a beer in his hand while the "rocket car", as Broadway Bob called them, staged. How cool is that!!!
Wow, that DOES bring back memories. Here it is on OCR, in 1979. I was fresh off the boat from Sweeeden. I had never seen anything like it...the smell of jet fuel from the pit, and pot from the bleachers Welcome to America !
Bob has been known to tip a few beers at the racetrack, so he would do things that no sober person would do. Like sit on the front of Doug Roses Green Mamba Jet Car with a beer in one hand, while 25 foot flames were coming out jet cars tail pipe. The fans just loved it. They would go absolutely crazy.
Glad to see they got it back together after it was stolen a while back. Can't wait to see it in real life.
