I have never seen any 60's LINCOLN CONTINENTALS on the hamb. any reason for this? lets see some pic's of stock and custom continentals.

also I have been tossing the idea around to buy one.

I was interested in what years of the third gens is the best year to buy. Engine wise what’s the best hp rating. What are the most reliable engines that came stock with the car? Also what engines have a performance parts market, where I can find parts easily?

  5. This is my 61 I sold a couple of years ago. I really love these cars, but there was too much crazy electrical (lots of relays) and vacuum stuff that could go tits up at any time and leave you stranded. I was really torn on selling it, but the right offer showed up and now it has a new home. Giant bling wheels and a blue cloth top...sad.

    I've had both, A 65 Continental and a 64 Coupe Deville.

The oil Filter for the Lincoln was $2 and the oil filter for the Cadillac was $15.

The battery for the Lincoln was a standard group 24 (or 27) while the Cadillac battery was obsolete and there is no way a regular battery will fit in the confined space behind the Grille.

The U-joints for the Lincoln were $12 and the U-joints (CV) for the Cadillac were ~ $85 each.

Everything on the Lincoln worked as far as electrical and power options.
The Cadillacs are know for there very poor wiring.
The needle on the gas gauge would jump up and down when the signal lights were flashing.. The wonder bar radio in the Cadillac did not work even thought the car had just over 50,000 original miles on it. The power windows for the rear passengers would usually go down but were a bitch to get closed. The windshield wiper washer pump was extremely expensive to replace as was the Power Antennae for the radio. The alternator and regulator were actually just of the shelf GM units so they were not particularly expensive.
The Cadillac 429 engine was expensive to maintain and lacked confidence in pushing the beast forward.

After owning both a Lincoln and a Cadillac of similiar years and each as low mile originals, I came to one conclusion.
The old adage that a Cadillac will nickel and dime you is true but the dimes are $100 and the caddy needed many cash injections.

The Lincoln was my daily driver for years and only required gas and oil with the exception of a worn out starter to the tune of $65.

As far as roominess... The Cadillac although a Large car felt small in size when compared to the Continental. The large trunk in the Lincoln was capable of carrying 8 15" tires on rims (two complete sets of tires during winter change over). The legroom on the Lincoln was luxurious while the Cadillac had adequate room for 5 or 6 adults.

I really enjoyed both Cars but there was no comparison when it came to luxury, reliability or serviceability. Owning a Cadillac is expensive with it's brand specific maintanance items. (come on, $15 for a specialized 'Cadillac' specific oil Filter?)

The coolest part of owning a Lincoln is the suicide doors and room to through a party inside. They are a nicely packaged luxury car without the nickel an dimeing of the Cadillac

The coolest part of owning a Cadillac was in the thumbs up that staunch GM supporters would give you as you drove by.
It was not cool being stranded when you can't buy a cadillac specific battery.
(I had to buy a regular group 24 battery and set it on the front floor, then run jumper cables out thru the passenger side vent window and leave the hood open a crack so I could snake the booster cables into the engine compartment. It was a little scary driving the car home with the hood cracked open and only being held by the second latch)

I would defiantly buy another Lincoln but would not buy another Cadillac.

jmho, Save your money and Buy a Lincoln

  7. ^ ford guys- :)

i own a cadillac AND i kinda like continentals

ive maintained a elderly neighbors 1963 conti convertible for coming on to 5 years now

i think that the contis are really cool cars, i really do- however, its had more phantom problems than i can count - i guess it really depends on the car - as far as i see it, the cadillac is much easier to maintain/drive daily

quick example - what the fuck ford, running water thru the damn choke on the carb? "nah - dont worry about any corrosion that might occur in the future"

id also like to see custom continentals without 20 inch wheels

My friend was gonna buy a really sick 63 that was in the classifieds here. I wish I had some pictures of it. I love these cars, I'll get one someday.

  9. A friend looks after a '62 Linc for a well-to-do client of his, and it's a great car, but I'm surprised how much room there ISN'T in the car. The boot might be huge, but the passenger area is quite small.

Great car to ride around in, although it did take my buddy a long time to sort out all of the little electrical and vacuum issues that went wrong with the car due to poor maintenance. He got it all sorted though and now it's a great car to cruise around in, and there's way less chance of seeing another one at the lights as opposed to '59 Cadillacs! Those things are everywhere!

I got a 63 Lincoln...haven't had much time to work on it, but I have a lot of stuff ready for it! Wheels, bags, 4-link, fresh motor, etc. If I thought about buying one again I would have to shoot myself. The motor is ridiculously big and heavy, engine parts are expensive, it's a unibody, and as others have mentioned there is a ton of vaccum crap that I plan to just scrap. Jason from Flyrite (Evilfordcoupe) is working on a conv 64 that is coming right along. Not sure if he has pics to post.

Only pic I have on this computer is one I photoshopped with the wheels I'm running. You get the idea though. Rough.

    Yeah, no shit, Scott! :D

Not that I can blame you... I too, have some "adult-sized" vehicles, and I have to admit that it IS pretty fun to see how many parking spaces you can take up at once in the back 40 at Wal-Mart...

Wait till you see me in the model A roadster i plan to build one day.... I'll look like Andre the Giant in that thing, just like i do on my little Norton motosickle.

  22. That has some real potential. These earlier Lincolns are even longer than the 61 and up style. Look forward to seeing this one done up someday...

Talking about the 60 vert that was posted.

I sold my rdiciously rusty -64 a few years ago, but still it was a very reliable daily driver with all the luxury you could ask for.The down side was, as mentioned, the vacuum shit and the prices on spare parts. But still I love those slabsides and a 'vert is on my wish list.

Here's mine. Probably the world's first '64 Lincoln with disc brakes on all four corners. Other than the brakes, it's pretty much stock. For now...

    Exactly "poor maintenance"...

Guys, including Lobsterboy X & Moefuzz, you do realize it's 2008, right? Moefuzz, you sound like you are in 1964 and reviewing these cars side by side, brand new, (which, if you have a couple low mileage examples of each is really cool in and of themselves, except) it's as if you're writing for a 1964 MotorTrend article, combined with today's prices.

These assumptions as to reliability are not really fair given the MANY variables that can occur to two different marques of machinery with many working parts; these cars are now 45+ years old. Kennedy got his skull re-arranged in 1963 in a Lincoln, right? That was a long, long time ago. (Sorry, it's what I think of every time I see a black '63 Conti convertible)...but I will concede that the price differences for "modern" parts are ridiculous...a Lincoln is really a Ford in disguise, right? :D

How many hands/climates have these cars passed down through? An East Coast 1963 is not going to be as well preserved as a West Coast one unless special attention was given (think electrical corrosion, not necessarily faulty engineering.)

Both Caddy's and Lincoln's probably worked just as intended for the first few years of ownership...expecting a 45 year old wiring/vacuum 'nightmare' is part of the "fun" of these "old" cars, isn't it? Who knows where these cars have been...

By the way, I'm Lincoln all the way...my feeling is, just expect to throw money at it no matter who made it.
