I need some info on the 1929 Ford Model A, Special coupes... I just recently picked myself up a 29' body and havnt got a chance to jump into it yet... I was told the top, whis is a leatherback (ref. pic 1.) Is not a full metal roof compared to a sport coupe. I was told that between the rear window, and quarter roof panels is just wood and they used to put chiken wire there to build the leatherback panels off of... If this is true how would one go about filling that section and making the roof look like picture #2? Or is there even anything I can do? Thanks! #1 http://www.abarnyard.com/corral/images/28scpe-1.jpg #2 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=401175&d=1200526438 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/attachment.php?
You're right the special coupe is a wood and wire construction. Without getting into production dates it took the place of the regular coupe, which has the roof that you're after. The easiest way to get what you want is to stick a regular coupe roof on there. If it were me I'd go for a version of the special coupe roof for something a little different.
Finding the regular coupe roof may be difficult. If you want to make your special look like a regular, you can fab the missing parts. You'll need to add a beltline around the lower back, a rear window section (use one from a sedan), and fill a lot of nail holes and crude unwelded seams. It can be done, because I have seen it done.
I am building a '28-'29 special coupe right now, and I ended up putting in a sedan rear window when I chopped it 3". The whole top was really floppy when I got it, but it looks pretty good now. Check out the "Under 30" posts on page...14? for pics. (I'm at work now and don't have pics or time to post...) Anyways- not a bad thing to have a special coupe. just build it like it was normal.
metal held onto wood with nails it is the same as a regular coupe in dimensions so you can just bolt on a regular coupe top section tk
Standard coupe roofs are hard to find. I had thought about using the roof off of a Chevy. I have one and it looks similar. It was a 31/32. But I since found a standard coupe roof. Someone just lately did a post on making a carson top for for a sport coupe. Clark I believe. You could also make it a sport coupe, the real 3 window coupe. Neal
i got a 29 Special and im leaving the top. I didnt like it at first but it grew on me and you dont see them that much so i think im going to keep it.
Yea... Leatherback top is here to stay guys! Thanks! Shooting to have the car done by Sep. 20th for Hot Rod Revolution in Pengrove!!
