My wife and I just moved to Manitoba from Alberta, and we just brought home an old rod that was built in the 70's and was last registered in '88. I've got all the paperwork for it, but what kind of hoops do I need to jump through to get it inspected and registered? Are there any "hotrod friendly" inspection places around? Does anyone in the province run "antique" plates to get around the inspection issue? My understanding is that cars running antique plates don't need to be inspected. If so, what kind of limitations does running those plates have? The local MPIC dealer doesn't have the answers I need. I'm not trying to put a piece of **** unsafe car on the road, but there's a few fairly minor issues (park brake, rear shocks, front bumper, etc.) that the car needs to have addressed before it would p*** an inspection in order to get regular plates. I plan to look after those problems asap but it would be handy to have the car driveable so I can get it to the people who can help me. Thanks!
I know a few guys who run antique plates. They don't require an inspection, but it does have it's limitations. Technically, you can only use the vehicle for parades, events & shows, or taking the vehicle to repair shops. Now....that being said, I know several people who have driven in "one car parades" and take their cars/trucks to a friend's place to make "repairs" every weekend. One thing I'm not sure of is coverage in case of an accident. And the only place you can get an Antique Plate is at the main DMV on Broadway here in Winnipeg. In the past, I've usually picked up a 7 Day Temporary registration to get me where I need to go. Thankfully I only have a few more things to complete (new windshield, new brakes all around) before my truck will p*** a safety and I can get daily driver plates!
Born and raised in Manitoba but left there 17 years ago. It was always easy to get reggie. But I hear things may have tightened a bit, but not nearly like we have it here in B.C.. Good luck.
Thanks for the info, CC. I think I'll be looking into the antique plates for the time being. Better than having to run back and forth getting temp permits, and runs and events are pretty much all I'll have time for this summer anyway. Our local MPI dealer thought that I could get plates in Brandon, so I'll give them a call on Monday. If not then I make a trip into Winnipeg.
PM'd you a couple of names that may be able to help you or at least point you in the right direction. I have heard rumour that there are inspection garages that will swear that your vehicle had bumpers, fenders etc when they inspected it and you must have taken them off after. Don't know if they would look the same at emergency brakes and lack of shocks. Canuck
Thanks again for the names. Yeah, I've heard there's a few places like that back in Alberta as well. I don't want to drive the truck in an unsafe manner, but it would be nice to be able to get it to friends places to fix the issues I have. It will be a year or so before we can get the shop built here.
Welcome to manitoba the coldest country south of the north pole & north of the south pole! Anyway, back to registraition problem for your bichin looking truck. I don't know of any people in Neepawa that can help you but here are some ideas that might help. Look in the yellow pages for the Manitoba Street Rod ***ociation and give them a call. You could also call Laurie Mustard at the winnipeg Sun newspaper, He write's a great hot rod colum called Cl***ic Corner Also contact Sandalefabracation They have a fantastic sit on the web. Even if Sandale can't help you it's worth the look! good luck Rocket Ride
Thanks for the welcome and info, RR. I'll do some digging around and call a few folks to see what I can find out. I'm really hoping to get this beast on the road this summer.
I looked up Manitoba Street Rod on the web. They have a site that gives all the info. your looking for! I didn't read the whole thing, It's pretty long. You might get ill after reading it! But like another hamber quoted " I have a hot wrench and a big efin hammer, watayou mean it can't be done" You will have to put rear brake cables , shocks & frt bumper on first .That's just common sense. You can take the bumper off afterwords. Allso you should do as mutch as you can before taking it in for the safty to minimize the times you have to take it back for rechecking! to finalize the safty. i second sandale for a shop to take it too. they're located about 5 mins south of winnipeg just off hwy 59. i work right beside them and theres always old cars in the parking lot. my friend works there and does safeties, thats where i'll be taking my A when its done. they definately know the rules of what can and can't be done. they're more easy going to letting stuff slide, then what a normal garage would, especially on an 80yr old vehicle, not saying that they p*** everything that comes threw the door.. they're still firm.
