Any of you insiders know anything about the "Whatthehaye"?(sp?) that Boyd built? I've oogled over it in the background shots on the TV show. I think I even saw a snipit of him driving it once. I see it is on the cover of the Barrett-Jackson's preview mailing. I only caught a portion of the B-J preview show the other night.

It lights my fire. I wanted to learn who designed it and any info on it before it shows up on the auction.

I'm sure all the teasing was done on purpose...and it worked.

Did I miss the big magazine spread or is that timed to hit just before the auction?

Somebody posted a pic of it here a few months ago. it was titled "Boyd car at local show" or something like that. It was based on the design of a Dellahaye (sp?) from the 30's. It is low and swoopy, grey over black. The guy was driving it a few issues ago was the same guy they built the Alumatub, the 32 roadster, and the mustang for.

    I found that other post.

    Thanks... I suspected that.

I thought that car would spark some interest on this board. Maybe if it had wide whites and red wheels?

Now, when is the election? Howard Dean is ahead right? [IMG]

I have only caught a glimpse of if, like you.
I did not try and find out more about it, because something seemes proportionally off to me.
It might be as simple as changing the Wheels and Tyres to some tall skinny Traditional ones...
And then again, I might like the car when I spend some time looking at it.

I saw something about it on TV (somewhere, maybe Barrett Jackson), they said it was another Marcel body with Delaheye(sp) styling que`s. Sharp looking car!

The workmanship appears good, some of the proportions and details look unresolved.
The color doesn't do it justice.

I wonder if it comes with a title ? [IMG]

She must have really loved the mustang he got her for her birthday because it`s up on the auction block also, as well as the Alumatub!!

I'm glad others like the looks of swoopy late 1930's French coachwork, Delaheye, Delage and Bugatti were in a class of their own back then. Guess I missed the coverage of the current Boyd built car. I've only seen one of these in person (Goodguys Rhinebeck), nicely built, buy just too large compared to the originals of the '30's. I've got to get one of those Photoshop programs, and draw my '36 Ford 3 window poormans version of a Type 57SC Bugatti.

Elrusto said this is a photoshop so I assume he slammed it and added the wheels. Why do I think Boyd would use billet? I think it will look better with the wheels fitting the wheel wells.

I love the proportions for this style personal luxo hot rod. Cars of this type always had looooong hoods to cover the 12 or 16 cyl engine with 2 seats. I had a design in my head for an earlier 30's personal hot rod coupe. More of the Deusenburg style. 34 style fenders. A more angular roof with a short cut off flat deck and maybe even a continental spare. (A golf club door is a must!!)

Probably hard to drive at first with the front wheels so far out there, but I'd like to try. Is it that much bigger than a Lincoln Town Car?

    Anyway I like it.

The latest creation from Boyd Coddington¹s Hot Rod Garage, the classically inspired "What-the-Haye", is set to be debuted at the Goodguys Del Mar Rod & Custom Nationals April 2, 3 & 4 in Del Mar, CA. The Dodge Viper V-10 powered machine is wrapped in a one-off custom shaped skin by Marcel. The finishing details, and of course the wheels, all live up to the exemplary reputation of all the products to carry Boyd¹s name.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gabriel Lopez of Gabe’s Custom Interiors is Coddington’s go-to-guy for distinctive upholstery work. Lopez tailored a black-and-gray leather interior that expresses the simple elegance Coddington desired in translating classic French coupe to all-American hot rod.

Speaking of all-American, the drivetrain Coddington selected for this project was an 8.3-liter 500 hp V-10 and 6-speed manual lifted directly from the latest Dodge Viper. Coddington just rolls his eyes when asked if the engine that overpowers the 3,410-pound Viper is modified for his approximately 2,700-pound hot rod. “We left it alone except for a different exhaust system,” he says. “It sounds just like a Ferrari, and with the suspension it handles like a European car.”

The completion of this nearly two-year-long project has Coddington looking forward to doing another hot rod with a European accent. Next up is his interpretation of a Talbot Lago fastback coupe. Because these projects have an inherently bespoke nature, prices vary; if you would like one for yourself the cost will likely reach north of $200,000.

looks like those are his billets, of course [IMG]

I think it tends to resemble an old Jaguar more......and I am just about sick of DARTH VADER [IMG]- air cleaners arent you?

  17. HAHAHAHAHA Johnnyfast that's really funny. Printing that one out and hanging it on the shop wall. The car was at Goodguys phoenix and was really cool to see in person. Someday I would like to build something like that. I got some pics of it at goodguys.

If you want to own it, wait for the Barret-Jackson auction.
I was just watching the Speed channel and it is listed for sale at this years show. I wonder if it will top the $400,000 that the Zephyr brought last year.

  19. Here's some detail shots for you Tommy [IMG] (couldn't resist that!)

Last January we stopped by Boyd's and he started the Whatthehaye up for us and gave us the "tour". I was impressed by the workmanship and especially because it was certainly thinking "outside the box" and different than all the Boydsters sitting around for sale.

Re. the air cleaner comment - from this angle you can see it's covering the K & N elements:

Must be a standard one for them because here's one on a Packard with a Viper motor you may have seen in the background too (BTW they were working on the Alumnatub frame when we were there in Jan.)

And just to show you a detail that caught my eye and looked a little out of place there:

PS I have an .mpg movie where I walk around it while Boyd started it and revved it a few times. It's funny that I haven't heard a rod that sounds good with a Viper yet, but the sound is a perfect match for this European style car.

Well, it seems lots of people love to hate him (none of my business) but that is one beautiful automobile, not a traditional hot rod but beautiful just the same.

I'd lay down some jack for a pay per view of Marcel and his boys building the body on that one!!

Thanks Dennis. I was afraid it would have a EFI 502 crate motor. The dash is a little plain for the rest of the car but what a work of art. IMHO

HA! I was going over things with my web designer and came across this thread.

As for who designed it, I DID!

:) Glad to see someone wants to know.

My name is Gary Constable from Mutant Design. I did the original sketches, but Boyd seems to have a habit of forgetting people's names so I was never mentioned. Surprise. Surprise. He wanted me to do some more work, but didn't send any more money, so I stopped. My sketch was on Boyd's T.V. show, he listed it in the top ten favorite hot rods. Turns out I could have sued him for using my artwork without permission on the show. The sketch will be added to my web site soon.

    Ah well.

My website is being designed right now, but I can be contacted at my myspace page at www.myspace.com/mutantdesign

The Whatthehaye was built for a guy in Rockwall Texas. I wont publish his name but he owns Rockwall Auto Action. He also bought the Alumitub, and the yellow mustang was also built for this persons wife. It seems he sold it at BJ 2 years ago and got large bucks for it. I saw this car up close and Marcel and sons are all that. This car is one of the classiest rides I have ever seen. In my small book this Boyd composite built car is one of the nicest, well built rides I have ever seen. It is a rare case where the "owner", Boyd, Gary, and Marcel's worked together to fashion an all time classic with a no limit on money approach. And to me it is not a billet queen at all.
    Just .02cents.
