If anybody should have a show on the Discovery Channel,it should be Gene Winfield!
No drama,no Hollywood, just excellence in hot rod construction.

Too bad no one has the common sense to do that.

Gene is a super nice guy. Met him last year at the Autorama and look forward to talking to him again on Saturday

Some buddies and I were selling some of our junk at the Long Beach swap meet last year. It was getting close to pack up time and the swap meet was thinning out. We were just shooting the shit, and most of the way through a Thirty pack, when an old guy came up to our pile to look. I got up to see if he was interested in anything we still had left. When the old guy looked up at me it was Winfield. I was a little dumbfounded and just said "Hi Mr Winfield" he said Hello back and said nice stuff, poked around a little bit more, and went on his way.
Five minutes later Exibit walked by, and we just yelled "Hey It's Exhibit" and he waved us off and told us to "SSHHHH"
    I love the LBC

The Scroungers and a few hangers on,(of which i'm relegated to, as none of my cars are cool enough!),decided that it would be a good idea to get Gene Winfield down to little old New Zealand for the Kumeu Hot Rod Festival, so we all pitched in and paid for his trip down under.

Man! What a cool guy! Even after a 13 hour "non sleep" flight he was still keen to go around and look at cars in workshops. And at Kumeu,on the saturday night, the moment that we had been waiting for and made it all worthwhile, Gene gave us a history lesson on how he got started by watching an old Japanese craftsman hand beat panels, his first shop, his cars, right through to stories about some of the other customisers we've all only read about.

If I ever reach his age I would be happy to have done a tenth of what he has achieved. He is more than a hot rodding legend, he's also an ordinary average approachable guy thats been there and done that.Meeting him was an honour.

I met Gene Winfield several years ago at the Summer Nationals here in MA. walking through the vendors area we just struck up a conversation. Later I caught up with my wife, explaining to her who he was and that for someone into cars it was comperable to meeting Ted Williams. She went up to him asked could I get a picture of you with my husband, he said "sure if I can have one with you" so we both had our picture taken with him
The following year he was here again and it was like seeing an old acquaintance,we discussed using lead and that he was releasing the rights to reproduce his paddles. Gave me his business card and said to give him a call. A genuine human being

I just finished reading a book about Gene called The Legendary Custom Cars and Hot Rods of Gene Winfield by David Grant with foreword by Spence Murray. What a great book and lots of old photos of some of the cars he built.

He was at our car show in Lake Havasu City, AZ several years ago and chose a car for the Gene Winfield Pick Trophy. Didn't have a chance to meet him at that time but hope I will some day.

I saw a custom 67 caddilac he painted at a world of wheels show some years back.I kept walking around and around, looking at the lime green fades and the depth and clarity of the candy. The paint alone left me awestruck and to this day was a near religious experiance.
    You da man Gene!!!

I'v posted this before but: He was at the pate swap meet selling stuff. I recognized him from old magazines, and was like - Wait your..... Hey..

He was real cool signed a couple of things for me, and just seemed like a ..... car guy.

Funny thing was, this was in 2000, and no one there had a clue who he was.

Yes, for sure, Gene is a true Gentleman with Class. We did one of his workshops here in Tacoma(Dino's shop), and he pounded on that 50 Merc for 10 hrs while showing us the REAL way to shape metal. We used every tool in that shop. The second day, We went at it even longer. Man, is he talented. He took the time to make sure everyone of us understood what was happining and got their hand in it. Yes, He does love woman, as he always see's my girlfriend before me. He always has time for HER also. That's important to me and I appriciate that. We met a bunch of cool dudes that weekend. We all came to see the MASTER at work. He made time for all of us. Sign up and do it! Great fun and a lifetime memory. B

I got to spend the day with Gene at the Indy World of Wheels a couple of weeks ago. His next project will be great! I can't wait to see it.

Gene is at the Detroit Autorama this weekend so if you get up there look him up.

  15. Total class act every time I've ran into him. And to be doing as much as he is at his age is nothing short of insperational.
