Looking for ideas on how to mount and illuminate the license plate on the back of my roadster. Sure the easy way would be to have it hidden but that's not what I want. Let me see your solutions.

I find it ironic that a Model A has a larger panel to place a tag light and license tag than a Deuce :) I like to use the AC Cobra tag light. It also has two small light bulbs in it for illumination of the license tag.

The AC Cobra tag light is reproduced and sells for $39.95

I've had this one on my sedan. I sold the car ,but i still have it. It's a stainless tube that you can mount above or below your plate.

I don't have small enough photo but I used a plain stainless frame with Lite-n bolts to illuminate it. Very simple and plain.

  7. I think this is the same one Scooterville shows.

It's mounted to the underside of the body as is the plate.
Leaves the whole back end clean except for the 39 taillights.

Note that the license plate is hung on a piece of 18 gage stainless so it can hang down a little bit.

If you made one of these for your car you could hang a similar one underneath - or on top - of your plate.

That said, like Deuce Roadster says, not much room on the under trunk lid panel.
His answer looks like the best one so far.

    And . . . best of all . . . it's trad....

I found that in the 80s Porsche/VW/Audi's used a hidden frame that mounts with 2 screws behind the center of the plate. The holes even lined up with the spare tire mount on my A-bone.I just added a funky swap meet light above it.I like the look.

I've found mine on ebay. I'm not sure how true it is but the auction said it was a repro from the 50's- 60's.

    FWIW,,
I'm spent TOO much time chasing this same need..
I also needed a back up light.. then one day i was following a Volvo1800SE sedan & bingo !! sitting right in front of me is this combo license plate/ back up light & chromed to boot.
    very un-invasive looking..
still looking for a source, just my two $$

I plan on using the trunk emblem off a '51 chevy. The emblem has a notch underneath that the plate fits perfectly up into and there is enough room to mount a light under there too. Here is a mock up with 41-48 chevy tail lights.

Nightprowlers (www.thenightprowlers.com) sells those tube lights and a couple others, too.
I'll second the lightnin bolts, though: they aren't traditional at all, but they are almost completely unobtrusive.

I picked up a set of stainless acorn bolts with a slot milled into them for a light, when I went to the americruse last yr. I think the company was called Golden Hotronics ( there from the Denver area) They give out just enough glow to lite up the tag.
