We rebuilt my buddy's T-10 for the same reason. His was a badly worn second gear..unless you were accelerating, it would pop out. You couldn't even cruise unless you held it in.. My own car has a T-10 as well, and down shifting it'll pop out of second too.. I think mine is syncro's, but i havn't really checked the gear's for wear yet either.......mine may need gear's as well.. When does your's come out? deceleration, cruising? Tony
When the trans is cold it works fine. When it up to operating temp. is when it pops out. It will pop out on or off the gas. I did put all new syncro's it the trans. along with a new cluster gear shaft, needle bearings and thruss washers. I had a car with bad U joints and when you would take you foot off the gas it would pop out of gear but in this case the U joints are new. I understand this is a common problem with early T-10's. One trans. person told me the solution is to replace the slider with a "Torque Lock Slider".
Seems to me on the early T-10's there was a problem with incorrect(different) angles on the cone shaped areas of the synchro rings.IIRC there are 5 degree angles and 7 degree angles and if they are mixed they can cause the popping out of gear condition.
tall john is right though, the old t 10s had that problem,a lot of guys are going with super t 10s,the super is like kryptonite, compared to the old t 10s
Theres notches in the sliders which "lock-up" when there is a load on the unit. This is why you can't pull it out of gear with a load on it. When they wear out, they will pop out of gear. Sometimes the hub that the sliders ride on gets worn, too. Frank
What kind of shifter are you running? If it's a Hurst with stops it may help to loosen the 2nd gear stop and back it off a bit. Sometime these get adjusted a little tight and the trans is not in 2nd all the way. May as well check for shifter alignment and the 3rd and 4th gear stops while you're at it.
The trans. is in a '58 Vette with stock shifter. The shifter was taken apart, cleaned and lubricated before assembly. This shifter does not have "stops". The problem is in the trans. Thanks, TJ
