I have a 60's stewart warner 3 3/8 speedo that is no working its got a brand new cable hooked up to my muncie transmission. When I first drove the car the speedo went up to 20 miles and then just fell flat and the needle just bounces over bumps is this speedometer broken??

    Thanks

    Sounds like it.

Not usually fixable with average tools. But a good old speedo is probably worth sending in for repairs. I've used these guys: www.gaugeguys.com

Something I'd check first though. Pull the cable off the back of the speedo and go for a drive. Is the end of the shaft turning in there? If not, the problem is upstream.

  3. if you didn't already, check the cable at the trans end and speedo. it might have bound and snapped. seen it happen.

On my last ride, I had the cable strip out inside the plastic gear, I finally found it by driving and holding onto the cable, and it would semi turn, until I would put some pressure on it, and it would stop turning. Another problem I have had was the tail of the cable was to long at the speed head, and that would bind inside the speedo. I have heard these guys are good on smith speedos: nisonger.com , not cheap but good.

If the cable is broken, its probably caused by the speedo binding up. They gum up inside after a while. If thats the case, you can carefully disassemble it and clean it out with light oil. Careful not to get carb cleaner on the odometer numbers. They rub off easy. Also, the spring in there returns the needle to zero... its calibrated and don't mess with it, it'll affect your readings.
On the side of the housing where the cable mounts, you'll see a small brass plug, like a miniature freeze plug. Pick it out, and theres a wick under there for light oil.
