Don't know about austin, but in AL they are paying from 7 to 9 cents a pound. People are s****ping EVERYTHING... I was at the s****per today and a guy drove a '65 IHC 766 (big *** tractor) there, across the scales at 9k, took his $800 and left.. !

Just about any junk yard in Austin will take them IF you have the ***les for them. If you dont have the ***les you will need to cut the cars up into small pieces and take them to commercial metals a little a time.

They made big cars in the 80's? I know that they were paying $220 a ton here for a while...

If you can't be talked out of crushing them at least take all the good part off for a future project, then derby it. That’s what I did. Scored a limited slip 10 bolt and good brake rotors. Sold the gl***, Won $200, and still s****ed it for another $100. Hell of a lot of fun and the car died with its boots on. I only hope that I never see the day when an 1985 Delta 88 four door is a desirable hot rod/restoration!

They are s****ping everything here too - and I mean everything. I've seen entire salvage yards s****ped out and closed. They're even cutting semi trailers up. I constantly have a parade of metal s****pers prowling my neighborhood. I'm currently trying to save what I can on a limited budget with limited space. It's a bad combination of things: slow economy, inflation, high gas prices, and China's appe***e for steel. I'll be curious to see where all this ends.

You can call abomination if you want to. I've crushed probably almost 20 in the last few months. Until you have a yard full of '80's junk that you have stripped every possible bit off of (and ran out of room to store it all) don't be critical of making money off piles of worthless junk. Most of what I crushed was given to me for hauling it away, and the money I make from s****ping goes back into a project. I sold a '92 Mercury Grand Marquis (wrecked, but driveable) last week for less than s**** price, just to get it out of the way... and a '96 crown vic as well.

Just my opinion, everyone is en***led to their own.

I say crush as much '80s **** as you can and as fast as possible - late 70's and 90's junk as well. Between late 70's and 90's, there wasn't that much made that is worth saving and the sooner it is gone the better. It really was a pretty low point for American autos particularly. They s****ped pretty much everything possible for the WWII effort, but still quite a bit remained and they started with less. It would actually be pretty hard to get rid of enough 80's junkers in my opinion. Crush 'em, make a few bucks and use the money to save some older cars that are actually decent and respectable.

Personally, I never crush anything old. However I have no problem at all crushing 80's cars, especially imports. I have really thought about getting my truck running and going back in to that business. Decent wrench turning jobs seem to have dried up in the Charlotte area and with the price of s**** it seems to be where the money is. I just don't see hondas, toyotas and mazda's being collector items or rod material.

Thats what they said in the 50's, 60's and 70's about the worthless junk you and I like so much today. To a young kid today, if he is into American iron and his idea of a cool car is an 80 Monte Carlo, that is cool with me....to him that is old....and not worthless junk.

  16. Crush away.......I have a 76 Chevy pickup that is going to the crusher as soon as I yank the engine.........best use of the material.

Maybe, and that is a valid perspective, but honestly, you can't compare an 80's Monte Carlo to even the worst of the 50's ****. Those things are so incredibly ugly, poorly designed and poorly built, you would be doing anyone a favor to prevent them from owning one and saving the rest of us from having to look at it. If the future for us is that people hold up 80's Monte Carlos in some kind of admiration, then I think we are in for a pretty sad future - hopefully not. Fortunately, not only are foreign companies building stuff now that is far better than even the 90's stuff, let alone the 80's, but so are American companies. Believe me, no matter how many do get crushed, there will still be plenty around for the few who do find them appealing for some unfortunate reason. As bad as they were, they made a lot of them. Maybe at some point, taking the worst of American desperate cost-cutting **** and somehow making it cool will be cool, but I doubt it and hope not.

I have a mechanic buddy that has to haul a few off to the crusher once in a while. I will send him an email asking where he takes them -- and about how much they pay per pound -- and will post what he says
Stay tuned.............but it will probably be Monday before I get an answer

This is easily one of the most ignorant replies I've ever seen on the HAMB. Shut your piehole, newbie. You waste bandwidth almost every time you post.

My buddy says he takes his to Commercial Metals here in Austin.
You have to remove the gas tank....and they dock you for tires and interior.
He says what they pay per pound varies from week to week depending on the market.
    Hope that helps

AMEN!! Here, you see a ton of people cruising the alleys scrounging for metal "anything"! Just a few days ago I saw some guys beating the sides off of radiators in the middle of the street. Awful part is, these people even go through your trash cans to find metal. One time, I saw one of these rejects reading some letters I tossed!! My trash doesn't see the curb until I hear the truck coming, now. I'm o.k with s****ing, just don't turn into some troll or junkie that thinks he HAS to live off of it!
