Just an update on my progress so far: Working on fitting rebuilt 63 Chrysler 361 into the Hudson. Had to cut the firewall. Working on getting it in between the x-member & the IFS forging. Darn Chrysler oil pump giving me headaches. Going to run a remote filter to ease the pain. Keeping the original Hudson IFS & steering. Next step is incorporating the 63 727 push****on controller!
Tore out the steering column too. 77 LTD column was a mess. Didn't start looking for options... always open to suggestions. Off the shelf or out of a catalog is not my style...
Just got back from working on the car... minor set back... found a big crack behind the motor mount... time to rebuild... got everything roughed in to weld up next weekend. So, remember, if you are welding 1/8" carbon steel... please don't lay a 3/8" fillet to hold it in place. That's way too much heat! Plus, you only need 1/8" anyhow. Oh, when it gets loaded... perhaps like a motor mount... it will crack. Oh, I'll repaint the car once the new motor & trans are in... deaden dark blue color. Engine bay is going a putty/gray.... stock Hudson color. All in all the car was painted in 1989? It sat under a car port for 14 years... and it still is decent.
Call John Cope at www.coperacing.com He runs a push ****on 727 in his 63 Dodge drag car He is a great person to deal with
B/B or B/RB oil pumps are always a headach. We machined the oil pump cover on the big block that is going in the Stude. The mill still sets pretty high in the saddle, but not nearly as bad as it would if we ran the common remote ol filter setup. Wouldn't have been near the problem with a Mustang front end, but then what would be the point? That would put us right up there with any street rodder type. What's that intake? Can't get a good look at it from here. Ya runnin' a pair of AFBs? Oh I started out to say a big block Chrysler how cool is that? Nice to see someone chooseing an alternative mill for a change.
I ended up getting a Canton remote oil filter adapter. Works well. Sticks out about 2.25" from the oil pump. Solved a lot of problems. Motor now sits behind the front cross member... Exhaust now misses the steering... Engine can be lowered to get a better angle... won't have to cut the tunnel to rear (well, maybe not a whole lot). I will post pics later this week (forgot camera today). Intake is an Edelbrock STR-15 (B/B version)... Running two Edelbrocks... I have two AFB's that need to be rebuilt. They will be on next year. Should be at Wheels of Time! I am working on Wheels of Time registrations & advertising right now. Later
I roughed in the trans push****on controller this past weekend. I mounted it on the left side of the steering wheel. Got some dash layout to redo... but look forward to trying it out. It will be a while till it hits the road.
Well, motor is in. Finishing up the wiring. Things are coming along slower than expected... but it will be on the road shortly!
Ran the exhaust through the frame. Running the 63 trans too. Local shop made me up a slider for the flange mount.
I owe my Brother (Jeff) some props with the exhaust work! Once the car is on the road & the bugs are worked out I will white ceramic coat the exhaust.
Thanks! Slower than I expected. Having lots of FUN with Dad & Brother building this one. Got a few more in storage to build yet! 38 Chevy Coupe & 34 Studebaker Sedan. Studebaker needs LOTS of work.
