I want to install a t-5 from a s-10 to the back of my 283. Could any one tell me what parts I need to make the conversion. I need to use the 153 tooth flywheel as my block is not driiled for the offset starter bolts. So is the a 153 tooth flywheel for 11" astro van clutch or is there a 10.5 for the s-10 spline? also what do I need to shorten the pilot shaft and is there a ready made pilot bearing out there or do I need to make one? I know that the opinion is its not heavy enough but when I break it I'll fix it.

You'd be happier with a 5 speed from an 88+ chevy/GMC or a hybrid camaro/s10 t5. With the full size truck trans, you can use all stock parts and be sure it all fits. If you insist on using the s10 t5, use a smaller clutch so you can't break parts. Some jeeps from the early 80s used the t5, and had a 10.5" clutch, maybe it is listed as a 10.25", not sure. That will fit on the small flywheel.
Use the correct flywheel, pressure plate, and throw out bearing for the 283/bellhousing combo you have. Then get the S-10 clutch disc. Your body correct clutch linkage should also work. The ****** will have the same hole location as older 3-speeds and Muncies, but the holes are metric and will have to be drilled out a wee bit. This ****** is longer than earlier models as well, so you may need a drive shaft swap.
We have a couple of projects in the shop using the Camero trans with the S-10 tail. We are using the GM bellhousing which requires the 153 tooth flywheel and 10.5 disc. Both of these are in deuces and we are using a Willwood slave with the clutch arm moved to the right side for pedal and exhaust clearance.
With the small flywheel, you are limited to a 10.5" clutch size, but there are no 10 1/2" clutches with 14 splines that I've ever seen. I've only seen them in 9 1/8" , 9 11/16" and 11". There are places that can make you a custom disc for about the same amount as an OEM disc. Search the net. You could try an '83 Camaro 2.8 V6 for the 9 11/16" application. I don't know if the pressure plate for the '83 9 11/16" would work on your flywheel without getting it redrilled or not. If the 10.5" pressure plate that belongs on your flywheel makes full contact with the 9 11/16" disc, then you really don't need to worry about it anyway. Make sure the bellhousing is for the small flywheel and has the correct center hole size. Some early 60's bells actually had a smaller center hole, for example. Stock pilot bushing is fine. To trim the input shaft AND input collar, all you need is a 4 1/2" grinder with a cutoff wheel on it. Test fit the ****** and clutch disc before final ***embly to make sure the disc will disengage from the flywheel. Sometimes its necessary to either lengthen the splines, grind some off the clutch hub, or make an 1/8" spacer between the ****** and bellhousing. If you were to go with a V8 Camaro version with the 26 spline input shaft, then you could get a 10.4" clutch disc from an '80's Camaro, but then the shifter is farther back, and you would need to convert it should you really need the forward shifter location. Do you want a mechanical or electric speedo sender?
Thanks for the info guys I think its been helpful. one last thing I want to try is to look @ my local U pull it and see if I can find a NV3500. if not I will probaly buy the 10 " disc from Krylon32 Thanks again.
Wouldn't a 3500 be a bit bulky? What are the ratios - it's a truck ******, right? Not familiar with them at all...
NV3500 is the T5 replacement in the smaller trucks. You're thinking of the NV4500 which is an OD version of the old granny 4spds in full size trucks. The NV3500 has an integral bellhousing and they use an electric speedo.

The NV 3500 has ****py gear ratios for any performance use,first gear is around 3.40 or 4 to one depending on the original application.It's rated at about 310 ft lbs of torque. For a small block use a Camaro T-5 from a V-8 model,a bolt in,no ****ing around with clutches or retainers.Just ream the mounting holes to half inch for older clutchhousings.1989 or earlier has a mechanical speedo,and I think 88 was the first year for World Cl***,a little better than the earlier models.And first gear is 2.95,a good choice for most uses.Some Camaro V-8 fifth gears are .62,might be a little high for some,some models are .72,much better.
Do a GOOGLE search typing in NV3500 to SBC and you till find a good tech article on installing on in a s-10. they all have electronic spedo's and one of the big reasons I am looking at something in the s-10 territory is I am building a p/u that I plan on using as a p/u ie hauling and towing. the wide ratio gear box is designed for that purpose.
