http:// I've had these grille sides for years, never paid any attention to them, got them in the trunk of my tudor with a lot of other stuff. They look like direct replacements for the normal 40 deluxe die cast sides but these are stamped steel, not chromed, appear to be factory made.Anybody have a clue ?? http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj74/rstanberry1/013.jpg[/ http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj74/rstanberry1/012.jpg"]http://

Are they the same size as the '40 Deluxe piece or larger like would fill the entire grill cavity? Hard to tell from the photo.
They look like 40 year old cheapo Argentina repros. Kinda look like they've been flattened a bit too?
These are definitely the cheapo Argentina grilles! And they are just that - not worth even for use as hole fillers. But, that is just my opinion. I've had several over the past 40 years and every time I wind up with one, I wonder why these were even brought to market they are so bad. But, I guess if you needed something back then and couldn't come up with a good die cast original (these were way before Dennis Carpenter and Bill Drake were around to give us really good repros) then I guess they would kind of fill the need until one showed up.
They are diffinitely the same size as the 40 deluxe die cast, the photo makes them look a different size.I was just curious, never seen any before.I had them about 20 years and never paid any attention to them.
put some paint on that stamping and it will do, untill you can save up to buy a Bob drake grill. Thats what I did.
Definitly a replacement grille. Could actually be USA cheap replacement from the 1940's, early 50's. The dies for the elchepo grilles got move to Argentena in the late 50's early 60's.
Wescott makes a 1940 ford conv. that is so perfect its better then a real one. checkout the cheaneld one .
Just out of curiousity,I've seen cast 40 merc grilles as well, are they a an old repop or a canadian thing.I've seen two different four doors with these and a friend has 3 stamped ones with stainless trim two 39s and a forty. I just brought a pair of 40 pickups home so I am on a new learning curve.lol
All original 40 Merc grilles are diecast. All original 40 Ford grilles are diecast (vertical bars on a Standard and horizontal on a Deluxe), except the outer portions of the Deluxe grille are stamped steel. All original 39 Ford grilles are stamped steel, and the Deluxe has stainless moldings clipped to it.
