I modified an old Moroso scoop to fit the hood on the Ranchero .I had to change from the plexi one cuz it wouldnt clear the carb with the Tunnel Ram.I had to trim it carefully around the factory bubble in the hood to make it work on the Falcon.I riveted it then glassed it ,so if it sucks i can always grind off the glass ,drill out the rivets and try another scoop to get the look right.I only have a few afternoons invested so far but i like it myself. Can i get some honest opinions on how it looks ,cuz i get tunnel vision sometimes.I wanted to try something different than the crowd and the scoop is old ,so you tell me .I dont want to spend any more time blocking and doing finish work to it if the lines of the scoop are all wrong for the car...
Looks like it is ready for a little Wimbeldon White, and you will be complete. Looks racy and in-character to me.
Here. Its kinda hard to see in the dark with the primer ,but the tip of the factory bubble is peaking out from under the front of the scoop and i blended it in to where it looks like it is part of the scoop...
I can remember back when everybody with a hotrod either had that scoop or a snorkel on their hood. Haven't seen that style in a long time. Looks good on the bird!
I agree...........wrong style for the car. I wish you had mentioned that scoop...I have one on a hood here that is coming off.........you could have had it...but it is still not quite right for that year car. Would have looked better with a "mailbox" style poking thru the hood.
I think a Hilborn style scoop through the hood would have been my choice but it still looks dam good.
Back in the day we never even cared what it looked like, it was function over form. Fact being; the guy needed something to straighten out the air flow, so make a plate to seal the carbs to the underside, then the time slips will tell if you made the right decision!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree a Teardrop looks best ,but has anyone actually ever tried to put one on a 60-61 Falcon?I have and there was no way to make it work , so i gave it to Scrape as a wall hanger. It doesnt even kinda fit at all .You would have to cut the entire bubble out of the hood and start all over. Its a snap to put one on the 62-65 style bird or a tri-5 or proly a Comet cuz the hoods are flatter ,but the early Falcon hood is a nightmare with that bubble on it.The only big scoops that i have seen that look like thay would fit easy are the T-ram style from Speedway ,and i agree they look good on it ,but that has been done to death and i prefer to try something different on mine.I agree the Moroso scoop is pushing it on the era thing but i also had to find something that would clear my air cleaner and keep water out since its my daily .Thanks for the honest feedback thumbs up out number the the thumbs down ,so i guess its gunna stay ...
Back in the day, you could buy a slighly smaller " bubble " They looked just like the Thunderbolt ones but were smaller.
Try this page; http://www.showcars-bodyparts.com/falcon.html they show a fibreglass teardrop hood, price does not seem to bad.
