Question about 'spring caster' (for lack of a better term)

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by alteredpilot, Mar 11, 2008.

  1. okay...

so i picked up a frame with a model A cross member already welded in. i'm planning on sweeping the rails forward of the firewall which will change the angle at which the crossmember sits. i would like to avoid cutting the crossmember out if i can.

    so...
since i'm going to run spring behind and can make the mounts anyway i want, is there anything to be concerned about with the spring pitched back a few degrees more than the kingpins?

    thanks.

    Leaf springs CAN twist.

Ever see a car or truck, with parallel leafs on back, jacked up on one side ?
The axle and frame are no longer in the same plane.
Since the spring is attached to the frame on both ends,
and the rear end in the middle, both springs have to be twisted.

You can put an angled shim in between the spring pack and the mount to get the angle you need. That is how the front of my 33 is set up. No problems and over 50,000 miles since the front end change.

If you sweep the front end up in front of the firewall you can also "sweep" the frame straight again just before the front cross member to straighten it out a little. You can have some of a backwards angle on the front cross member, but try to keep it as close to the same as the king pins as possible.

  5. yeah. that's what i was planning on doing, but the LAZY in me got to thinking...

sound principle was telling me to keep all my angles in line, but i get tired easy.

I'm the opposite way, once I get out into the garage I'll work for 10 hours and you'll got a hard time getting me back in the house. But that's once I get in there, I get lazy on the way out the door!
