This is a little bit left field- water pumps for 371 Olds engines apparently come in with ac and without a/c versions. Anyone have a clue what the difference is going to be in the pump?

Update: Actually, apparently all pumps from '49 to '62 are the same, probably just the later ones with the a/c option/difference.

I remember seeing that when we got a water pump for my 371, I think the pulley setup might be different to accomodate the compressor pump, but I could be wrong - our car never had A/C and prolly never will. I do know that our local NAPA got one inside of an hour for $80, which surprised the **** outta me, don't get ripped off by Kanter...

That makes sense, a pulley difference. Don't know what else could be different. Thanks for the reply.

every Rocket engine has at least 2 grooves on both the crank pulley and the water pump pulley,on the early Rockets because the generator sat high on the intake manifold, and as such required an idler pulley to maintain proper belt tension.
later Rockets had the generator mount moved to the exhaust manifold, but the power steering pump now sat where the generator was previously, however the idler was no longer needed.
A/C cars had 3 groove pulleys, which require a stronger bearing.

some of the pumps have more fins on the impeller also.dont think it was anything to do with ac.the ones i got have the smaller bearing.there are some that came with single small groove balancer, and pump pulleys.i do have a set off a 53.i figured it was ones without ps.if i remember right i have a 56 one with single grooves also.
