    Gotta have one.

After driving to Hunnert and back with Tyler and then driving his 59 Elky all weekend during Pistons and Paint I just can't see rolling my Elky with the th350 that's in it... I know the Dirty's will be proud.

Since the people I work for are apparently HIGH by thinking anyone who works there is properly compensated I've decided to take a second job, cooking meth and knocking over convenience stores. This is Oklahoma after all.

Since I'll have all this extra money I need to start looking at my manual options. I'm pretty interested in a Tremec considering I know first hand the abuse it will put up with.

But what model? Who? where? and HOW MUCH?

PS - Oh yeah, this is to bolt up to the 348 so should be standard Chevy pattern.

If you're not going to beat on it too hard, you might consider a T-5. They're pretty tough, especially the later "world cl***" units, and they're cheap to buy and reasonable to rebuild.

Find something that was behind a 4.3 in an S-10/Blazer, and it should bolt up behind a small Chevy.

Which model Tremec does he have? There are several variants, I believe the TKO is the one everybody buy$$ new. If you're looking for new parts, this might give you some idea what this stuff goes for. http://www.need-4-speed.com/tremec.htm

By the way - good idea to put a stick in it.

  3. the tko 500 or tko 600 are pretty good, we used the 600 unit in a malibu we just finished for the detroit show, i like em, but damn, $3500 roughtly through cl***icchevy5speed.com i believe.

if your not runnin 500-600 hp or ft.lb or torque then id recomend the t-5 route to save you some cash.

  4. Rashy, a little trip with my hand on your thigh in that ElCo had me sold as well..........on the Tremec, not you!

how well does a world cl*** T-5 hold up?

hope that still means your heading up the the pileup again...

  7. as far as i know world cl*** t-5's are good for a lil over 300 ft.lb of torque

Don't feel bad. I'm suddenly seeking a 6 speed that will take 700 ftlbs of torque. something about doing 70 at a tick above Idle and todays gas prices have made me a beleiver.

Anybody know where a wrecked Vette or Viper with the running gear still in it is laying, and is it uprotected after dark?:D

  9. Just some brotherly love:D

But seriously.........I took a ride in that car (minutes before we met Frank) with Tyler and Rashy..........for one that car has some snort and two, the ****** made the package. Rowin gears around town and mild manners on the return trip had to be cool.

Drove a borrowed '40 w/383 sb and a tko 500 on Americruise. It was like ****a' through every gear! Of course big torque means minimal shifting - important when selecting CD's while chatting up the wife on the cell phone :)

    Rashy,

    You'd probably do fine with a nice WC T5 out of a Camaro/Firebird w/V8...

TKOs & 3550s are great ******s, no doubt, but as mentioned, unless you're running 400+HP, the T5 should do you just fine - cheaper & easier to find too.

My friend with a Tremec TKO says it's noisy - I've not drive in it, so can't comment - he says his Mustang buddys all say theirs are noisy too...not that a little noise ever hurt anyone, but a bit of a gear whine I 'spose.

If you need something burlier than a World Cl*** T5, but don't want to spring for the $3000 dollar TKO600, there are companies making straight cut gear sets for the WC T5. Supposedly it ups their capacity to ~800 ft/lbs, and essentially makes your trans into a Muncie M22 with a 5th gear OD. Pretty awesome, if you don't mind the whine. The T5s are pretty easy to rebuild, and kits with new sychros and stuff usually go for around $200. If you do the work yourself, you can have ~$1000 into a 5 speed you can abuse all day and have it come back for more

The trans it self is just under $2,000 with your choice of .68 or .82 overdrive on the TKO600. The bellhousing, clutch, and linkage can be all stock. You will a need 26 spline clutch disc. The tremec trans yoke is about $65 but it may be the same as your th350?. The new TKO's are like ****er to shift and it is way more fun to row your own than driving a mindless slushbox.;)

You really need to check out cl***icchevy5speed.com and look over their rpm calculator. Determine your gear set, tire size and how you think you will be driving and at what speeds. They make 3 different versions. The TKO 500 has a very low first gear ratio and in the '69 Camro I'm building and the power it is making I'd be shifting to second half way through an intersection. So keep that in mind. I went with the TKO 600. If you are unsure still you can call Tremec's tech department they are super nice and will spend a lot of time with you as they did for me. I just put one in behind a '69 camaro I'm building and I really liked it although i haven't driven it yet. You can get them new for around $1,800 if you search around (I bought mine through Blumenthal). Or try the junkyards they were in late model mustangs and such. Nice feature about them is the ability to move the shifter to several locations by simply unbolting it an moving it or flipping it around. My particular application is using a hydraulic throw-out bearing and it was an easy set up once i got the part numbers. I went with McCleod stuff. Gotta love overdrive in a vintage driver!

One other thing, calssicchevy5speed will only sell kits but Tom P*** performance will sell individual parts and their number is 951.845.3850

Look for a T56 from a 94-97 LT1 Camaro or Trans Am. It will handle the 348 with no problem. The guys over at 348-409.com can probably help with the clutch and flywheel selection. Shifter placement can be dealt with if needed. I think the speedometer issue has been addressed by the aftermarket also. A ****** can be bought for between 800 to 1600 depending on pedals, slaves, etc. It is a sweet transmission with a 2.66 low and a .50 overdrive. You won't regret it.

  19. You can use the T56, you can also use the T5 or T5WC in any of these you are kinda stuck as far as ****fter location. When you get the TKO 500 or 600, they have four different shifter locations. see link, near the bottom of page shows the available shifter locations and some costs.

The t5 world cl*** are great, I have use the mustang variety twice and they really will hold up to some gear jammin. Of course changing the bolt pattern to chevy will substantially weaken the intergrity of an otherwise fine piece of equiptment.

It probably won't shift as smooth and it's only a 4 speed but I'm sold on the cast case A833. OD is available. I've been beating the heck out of mine and can't seem to break it. Other driveline stuff has died but not the trans, it's is one tough muther.

Oh yeah, It's a heavy ****er too.

I did a lot of research on this for my 36. I finally gave in to the TH-350 due to cost. I still want a stick car but it will have to be blown.....

And I doubt you ever will break it too Kerry.....:D
The OD boxes are pretty tough too, despite the aluminum cases....as long as the case isn't worn, (it isn't bushed for the secondary shaft)....

  24. I bought this car a little over two years ago.

    http://www.keislerauto.com/mopar/gallery/b-body-e.html

<O:pWhat I can tell you is the 440 is very healthy but not 500hp of healthy. The car doesn’t get 19 mpg either.<O:p</O:p

I drove the car from OKC to Dallas and back and averaged 13.97 mpg averaging 70 mph.

<O:pThe car has 3:55 gears and at 70 mph turns 2100 rpm.

The transmission has performed flawlessly and I’ve had no problems. <O:p</O:p

  25. i got one from http://www.moderndriveline.com/

the dude was super helpful too. he was out of stock on the tko 500, so he offered up a tko 600 at a way discounted price. went with the mid shifter option, worked out really well in the 51 oldsmobile. if i needed to buy another i would definitely go back to him.

  26. I don't want to know who was shifting what . . . yikes!

  28. I found a brand new TKO 3550 that was setup for road racing -- fifth gear was removed and it had a mechanical speedo. Only paid $600 for it. Then I found a new .80 (think that is it) overdrive set of gears and sent it to Hanlon Motorsports to rework it. (Add the fifth gear, steel shifter forks, mid-shift kit, etc). They do great work and are a pleasure to deal with. Checkout their website:

For the record I have a TKO600 behind a Stroker 383 with some worked heads. Plenty of HP and lotsa torque.

Rashy has logged several thousand miles in my cars with this drive train going to the HCPU and others:
Once in the Commander, we even lost the clutch leaving Chicago and drove back to Tulsa - Dallas with basically no clutch and the TKO laughed all the way.

This year in the Aquamino on a couple trips.

I really like the TKO, It is one piece of the drivetrain I am not worried about breaking, unlike the rear end that has gone twice and the 2pc driveshaft that will come apart at some point.

Too bad Rev. Jake doesn't still have that complete T56 for cheap.
    Good Luck Rashy
