I flew in a B25 today from Denton to Dallas, accompanied by a B17 and B24, it was very awesome. I didn't have a camera but I sat exactly where the below movie was taken. Also, had the opportunity to crawl forward into the front gunner station while in flight. This was an awsome experience, nothing like any other airplane ride I have ever had. In the area of the aircraft I was in you are setting in between the two 18 Cylinder Pratt and Whitney Radial engines with some pretty good sounds coming out of the motors I removed the ear protedtion just to listen to the motors. This experiance gave me a new perspective of the fella's that flew in these things and that pioneered Hot Rodding. I felt like I was taken back in time it was surreal. If you are in the Metro Plex area you can check this plane and a B17 and B24 all at the Frontiers of Flight Museum, starting today. My ride was free, yours may cost a little more. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlsqeP3pys4&feature=related <!-- toctype = X-unknown --><!-- toctype = text --><!-- text -->
Dam..I have always wanted to do that. or have a ride in a P-51 Mustang..you lucky bastard. I bet it was great!
Not to nitpick, but B-25's have Wright R-2600 14 cyl radials. Those have been flying over the hanger all week, sure is nice. "Tondelayo" is a beautiful bird, as is "909" and "Witchcraft" While on the subject check out: http://www.grayeagles.org/video.htm
My son and I got to go thur a B-17 here at the airport and sit in the navigators seat and gun post like my dads brother did for 17 daylight missions over Berlin. The $400 each for a ride was out of my reach but I sure would have liked to do it. My uncle came back an alcoholic and it pretty much ruined his life. He said he wished he hadnt come back.
You are probably right now tthat I think about it I was talking to a guy that flew B24's and he told me they had 18 Cylinder P&W. So I am sure I mispoke, thanks. It was still sounding very good though.
Come to Burnet on the 2nd weekend in April. We always have Devil Dog, The Yellow Rose, a C-47, P-40, an F-4F, usually a Corsair, a Skyraider, some T-6's, and have had a P-38, P-39, and a P-47. Plus a Connie and a MiG. Plus a good little car show.
My dad's younger brother was a co-pilot in a B-17 with the "bloody 100th" He was shot down on the very first bombing raid the 100th ever flew. June 23.1943. The 100th lost more planes than any other B-17 group in the war.
witch planes were they when they were here in seattle me and my lady went on the nine-o-nine what a flight if ya get a chance do it..jeffrey
www.collingsfoundation.org I flew in the B-17 a couple of years ago out of Burbank... unbelievable experience. Go on their website and find out when they are coming to an airport by you and GO! Even if you don't go for a ride, at least pay the small fee and get up inside of 'em and crawl around. It will give you even more respect for the "Greatest Generation"....
in the 60's, I got to fly a bunch of assistant crew member flights on C-124's out of Hickam AFB Hawaii. Nothing like 4 28 cyclinder radials at 2850 RPM ( takeoff power ) to get your attention. These links have been great....thanks
I had the opportunity to fly on the 909 a few years back and it was well worth the money. It will give you an experience you'll never forget. As stated above, it gives you a whole new respect for the crews (with an average age of about 19-20) who flew these machines over enemy territory. Awesome. I hope to fly in the Colling Foundation's B-24 one day.
I have flown in a B-17 (Nine-O-Nine), a B-24 (The Dragon and his Tail), and a B-25 (name escapes me currently). If you are forced to choose, a B-17 or a B-25 is a nicer ride. The 24 is a bumpier ride and ALOT louder (inside) aircraft. The 17 is nicer for sight seeing as well. Not saying I'm not glad I did the 24 ride, I am glad I got the oportunity. Just saying, if I had to choose only one, it would likely be the 17. The part that amazes me is the guys flying these in anger had to fly them (the 17 and 24 anyway) up to 13 hours round trip, not to mention fighters, flack, etc.
I love me some 4360 corncobs! Better than 4,................would be 6! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZSpqFPSK_c
Hell, if you're gonna dream about multi radials, how about 8 of them Wouldn't it be cool of the old newsreel footage of the Huges Herculese (Spruce Goose) had sound.
This just in! The B-17, B-24, and B-25 have started their 19th season on the Wings of Freedom Tour. Starting in Dallas, TX TP-51C "Betty Jane" will make joint appearances with the tour. Flight training in a P-51C coming to an airport near you!
Details! Details dammit! Is that through the Collings Foundation? Edit: Found it... and it's out of my price range
Betty Jane must be the new aircraft they've been hinting about adding on the WIX. The B-24 was louder than the B-25 inside? I don't believe that. I'm saving up for a Mustang ride for my 40th birthday. I flew in Ol' 927 last year...
Yep, 24 was louder. Not only engine noise, but wind noise too. Don't get me wrong, the 25 was plenty loud on the takeoff, but quieted down as soon as they throttled back. The 24 got 'quieter' but was still louder for engine noise.
I'm getting a red x here. FWIW the loudest 'Warbird" for takeoff I have flown in is a Curtis C-46 Commando. I didn't mention them earlier because my company still flies two of them, but it's hard to think of it as a 'Warbird' when they've got the company name on them (the nose art is kinda nice though). Edit: Now I see it. Very Nice
