Automotive Paint from Ebay???

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 58Fridge100, Mar 13, 2008.

  1. Ok- so I go to the paint store today in a perfectly good mood, to inquire about a basecoat/clearcoat package for my Truck.

....It was over $800.00 for Basecoat, basecoat reducer, Clear, Hardener, and reducer!! The Basecoat was $350.00 per gallon- for factory -type color-- and this is a discount store!!

Anyhow- I see this guys ebay store- selling basecoat/clearcoat packages- anyone have experience with this?
I have no idea what the brand name of the product even is- but it's sold from a "Kustom Paint Superstore"

    ...any thoughts?

(base/clear is only $199.95 for basecoat/clearcoat, and the reducers needed)

You get what you pay for. Period. $850 isn't that bad for everything you mentioned. Rustoleum is $40 a gallon at Home Depot...

Unfortunately this is the norm. Just spent 1900. for materials for a 57 chevy. I would not buy any paint off ebay. You can save a few bucks at your local paint store by going with Omni (PPG's ) economy brand or go with a different base color, you would be surprised the price range of colors..

I usually spend 1000 to 2500. Depends on the condition, colors and amount. If you buy "second line" paints from the major paint producers, you will find that either the color fades sooner, the clear loses it's gloss over time, or both.

    Your money...your choice.

  5. damn these prices make my ass pucker.but W T F....like Dolly Parton once said "it ain't cheap lookin like this"..........ebay is great for used stuff.what do ya do when it is crap paint????

i have used that ebay stuff not great but does the job it is nasson i think is the brand i called an they told the brand they are very helpfull

  7. What are you looking to paint and how much do you value your vehicle??

I know paint products are not cheap. But the paint is the first thing someone notices about your ride. It either looks quality or like second rate crap. $850 isn't really that bad. Alot of the factory colors nowadays have special effect toners or pearls. These colors are not cheap and you get what you pay for.

Think about the paint in relation to everything else you have spent money on for the ride. In the end, it really isn't all that bad. I find it funny when a guy complains about the price of paint but will then tell me he dropped 6k for an interior or 3k for a rearend.

  8. Try these guys:http://www.tcpglobal.com/autocolorlibrary/ I have bought some stuff from them, and it has worked alright.

Another idea is to use something like PPG's Shopline brand and top it with a quality clearcoat. It is cheaper than DBC, and I have used it with no problems. Their clear is supposed to be cheaper and still good quality also, but I like the PPG 2021 Clear, so I have never used the Shopline clear.

I wish more people would price out paint and supplies, because they act like we are trying to rip them off when we tell them that our paint jobs start at around $7k, and they say they could go to Maaco and get one for $250.00! We can't even buy paint for that, but they don't want to hear it!

Average paint cost for one of my paint jobs is $2K by the time you get paint, clear etc....... That's not counting labor.

I'm doing a '57 Chevrolet right now for a customer in Dusk Pearl/ Indian Ivory and the paint cost a bit over 2 grand.. that's for PPG Deltron base & Concept 2021 Clear and the necessary hardeners, reducers etc...

Paint is one item where I nut up and buy top shelf stuff.

  10. OK- Thanks for the feedback guys.
I've used Nason before, and I was actually really happy with it- except that the Basecoat was a little thin on toner, and didn't hide very well.
The thing is- I don't have a super high-dollar truck, and it won't even see that much use&abuse. It will be under a carport the vast majority of the time.....

Also- this isn't for a customer, so I guess I can get away w/ a little. I'll check out the tcpglobal- but keep your guys' comments in mind.

    Well said Kurt!

What brand of paint did you price at $850? Like others have said, OMNI or Shopline can usually come out around $300-$400 for the same. The OMNI clear isn't horrible, I've seen worse, but it isn't great. Like I said you get what you pay for.

I'm not up on these new BC/CC paints. I quit painting years ago using acrylic lacquer and enamel. I remember paying $60 a gallon for some red lacquer and I thought that was crazy.

I finally found a young helper and started on a new project in my shop last month. Although it doesn't need painting, we're pulling it apart for the changes and detailing. I went to my regular jobber to buy some supplies last week. When I ask for a gallon of 'cheap' lacquer thinner (used for clean up) the guy tells me he doesn't have the cheap any more, only less expensive. I used to buy it from him in milk jugs for $3 a gallon. Now its 'off the shelf' only @ $15 a pop. He says the government is the reason all the paint and supplies are as high as they are.

I also got some aircraft stripper. Evidently they've taken the good stuff out of it, as it doesn't work anywhere near as good as it did 20 years ago!

you can get Nasson at O reilly's auto parts. if they are a paint distributor they will have it on the shelf you just have to deal with the commercial side not the retail end of the store. and all O Reilly's have commercial sales.

People have no idea of what the materials cost anymore. This situation is just about paint.. Add paper, tape, fine line tape, etc, etc.... Go with a good paint if you plan on keeping the car for awhile.. it will be worth it in the long run, or spray it Flat black and run the piss out of it...... Jerry B..

give it a shot and let us know how you like it. its only 200 bucks. cant even go to macco for that. if its nason id try it. i used nason on all the interior parts of my dart, i thought it came out great especially for being a newbie to painting. i know my buddy bought some kirker black epoxy primer from a guy on ebay, it was real cheap and seems to work real good. like everyone else said you could always go to a paint shop and ask for lower end products. if you arent a pro there is no point in spending top dollar for the best products.

I bought a base/clear kit from TCP Global and it worked fine. Nice color, went on well, and the clear was smooth and buffed out well. Seems to be holding up well.

I'd use it again, esp for a DD. Can't beat the <$200 price.

  17. I would seriously consider PPG Shopline if you are wanting to save some dough like 40panel348 said. I've used it, including the clear and was very happy with it. I will be using it again on my A coupe this summer.

Beat me to the punch no55mad! I have the catalog at home, and they even have some nice looking custom color for very reasonable prices. I've never used it, but I've been happy with materials I've gotten from Eastwood in the past.

I would be leery about buying auto paint of E-Bay.Stick with auto body paint suppliers. Why pay shipping?

I paid @ $800 for all the paint for my '80 SWB pickup....a few gallons of base and clear, all the sandpaper, primer, hardeners, tape, etc.....
    So your quote sounds close....
I used Valspar, which isn't the top of the line, but isn't cheap either. Easy to work with....
BTW, Valspar owns/makes House of Kolor too....

How would one go about returning paint bought on Ebay that was not to your liking???? I like being able to see the color, in person, before paying....

The shopline paint mentioned above is just re-labeled PPG Omni... smae paint.

I use Omni/Shopline for alot of stuff . except for topcoat on good cars.
The Shopline Epoxy primer is really good for the buck.

Kirker primer is pretty good, but stay away from the paint. It's good for a buy here--pay here car or a tractor IMO.

the painter spent over $800 in materials to paint my 63 Nova, and that was a stock 2006 mitsubishi/chrysler color.

  24. NASON paint is made by DuPont..Your local DuPont paint store has it...
Somewhat cheaper than DuPont and I've never had a problem with it...

Valspar makes paint for Tractor Supply. Color choices are limited though.

  26. Omni's a decent paint for the money IMO- but stay away from a color w/ a lot of red oxide if you use it.

I wanted Kirker Hot Rod Satin Black on my new roadster, cost me a redo when is wasn't a consistent color. Was it the paint or the painter? I have my suspicions.

I had my 54 painted with Kirker by an experienced "older" painter. He loves the stuff and every painter that has looked at the truck says "wow".

They have some kind of base/clear product with factory colors and I let the Mrs. pick the blue which is called ultra blue pearl. It's a stock 91 gmc color I think.

About $500.00 in supplies including paper, primer, paint.

If your not looking for a top shelf job, try the crossfire line from NAPA. I use a lot of it on motorcycles, it's pretty cheap, the clear flows out great. I have yet to have a problem with it at all. I just bought a bike that I painted with it 7 years ago, and it still looks great.
