I've got a 72 400 out of a Catalina that came stock with a/c and a 2 bbl carb. The a/c compressor was in the trunk when I bought the car, and I have an Edelbrock P4B intake I wanna install eventually. I need to replace the fuel pump, and all the parts houses are asking the same questions: a/c or no a/c, 2 or 4 bbl carb? So, my question to my fellow HAMB'ERs is, what do I tell them? Thanks, Mike
Get the part numbers from all 4 combinations of setups and compare, chances are it's the same fuel pump and the counter jockey kids at the parts store just look up parts by what the computer asks them to put in...or go to a parts store not run by kids...my NAPA guy never asks me that ****...
Not sure on a 72, but some of the Pontiac years fuel pumps had a return line to the tank when you had airconditioning. That's why they are asking you air or not. So, if you want a return line, get the one with air; if you just want a single line from the tank, get the one w/o air.
Thats true, some actually do. What chaps my *** is when i go in to the parts store to get Pontiac valve cover gaskets and they ask what size tires i have. Daddyar , Can i ***ume you're a Paladins fan ?
Yup, the Paladins are my favorite band. I guess it's kinda obvious. Thanks to all who've replied. I really bought the car for the engine, which is gonna (someday) go into my 42 Ford p/u. And the only a/c will be the windows and cowl vent. BTW Axle, you (and the Shifters) did a great job with the Suede Palace at this year's GNRS. Kudos!!!
I checked with my NAPA guy today...go grab Napa part # M6803...that's a V8 fuel pump, non a/c...the a/c fuel pumps were higher pressure with a return line, and I have no freaking idea why, neither did my Napa guy...
That was my guess. I've had some early GTO's w/air that were prone to vapor lock in hot weather. Nothing wrong with a mechanical pump on a carbureated Pontiac. Love to see some pics of your truck.
Thanks everyone. The truck is a work in progress (literally). I am still collecting parts. (Aren't we all?) I can gather up all the parts I've got so far and take a pic of that, though.
That Edelbrock P4B intake is inferior to a stock Pontiac non-EGR four-barrel manifold, which flows as well as an Edelbrock Performer at engine speeds below 4800 RPM.
