If there are any Hamb members that might have a set of new or used Chilled Iron Lifters DeSoto Hemi for a 291, I am in great need. I spoke with Ron @ Isky today and advised him I cam acquired a NOS isky flat faced cam and he told me that a used set is fine they can be reworked. The part number would be 202. Ron told me to check the internet to try and locate a set. I only know of Racingjunk's web site and of course (e)bay. Does anyone have any other suggestions on other websites I should check ? If any feelers can be put out there for me I would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

The Chryslers & high deck Dodge/DeSotos can use lifters fom the early 361-413 era big blocks, Yours probably can also. Doc Fromader used LA 318 roller lifters in a 315 Dodge, so LA lifters may work for your low deck also. Expands the possible sources for the chilled iron lifters.

Yep, most Mopar V8's use the same lifters, 273, 318, 360, 440, Dodge, Desoto & Chrysler hemis, etc.

Even Packards use the same lifters. But chilled iron lifters to be used with a hard faced overlay cam are very hard to find. I paid $100 for a used set fron Donnie Johanson (Howard's kid) who then ripped me off on a cam.

I will give them a call on monday and hope for the best. Kool thing at least is that i have the cam sitting on the shelf. Mean time I can get my stock cam reground till I can locate me some lifters... Ron @ Isky was surprised to hear that I was running that cam. Strongly urged not for street/idle situations. The 291 has been a challenge to build, but in the end it will pay off. On the next hemi to make things a little but easier, I will jump to 331 or bigger.

Just caught this post; George, be careful about using B-RB lifters in early blocks. If you do a side by side comparison you will see that the oil supply groove is much higher on B-RB than A-LA or the early Hemi. Yes, they might be the same OD (same as AMC and others) but the oil groove should be as close as possible to the original. Adjustable pushrods will make up difference in operational heights.

Used them in mine, no problems with new, not reground, cam. The oil groove is higher.

CHILLED IRON LIFTERS & HARD FACE CAMS ARE NOT FOR THE STREET !!!

They will destroy themselve in a very short time, Will flatten lobes & concave the bottom of the lifters.

DO NOT use ANY lifter other than a CHILLED IRON LIFTER on the hard face cam !!

You need to run a Solid, Hyd, Or Roller if you plan to run this on the street.

I run SOLID 440 ( any MoPar V8) lifters in my DeSoto no prob, Have heard of the oiling thing on Hyd cams... But i think the Mid 60s BB Mopars ahve the oil ring in the correct spot.

Why do you guys have a fuss about building a DeSoto ??

I havent had any REAL problems building any of mine...

DE SOTO - I do plan on holding off on the hard face cam until I am able to locate some lifters for it. For the mean time I will get my original cam ground for my liking. If and when I do locate some chilled Iron lifters, I should be good to go for the street correct ? Will driving the car with the correct cam/lifter combo on the street - destroy the hard face cam and the chilled lifters ?

thanks everyone info - helping me out quite a bit

sold the coupe, building a 27 t roadster... powerplant comes from a 291 DeSoto Hemi. 10. :1.. I was going to use a reground cam in the beginning but then cam across this radical hard face Isky cam that was never used.. But looks like I am going to go back to the original plan for a reground cam to play it safe.. I figured I would post some pics of the build of the build after I get the motor from the machinist...

HOW DO I MAKE THIS CLEAR.....

HARD FACE CAMS & CHILLED IRON LIFTERS ARE NOT FOR THE STREET !!!!!!!!!!

They are designed for all out Drag racing & Lakes Racing !!

NOT designed for the idleing and constant RPM changes, They Require HIGH spring rates & will wear rapidly in a street application causing Lobe failure & concaving the bottom of the lifters.

In short you will RUIN the cam & lifters at the very least on the street.

IF you want a radical cam in the 291, Have a GOOD core re~ground to the specs of your race cam & run it on SOLID lifters.

I run a Large cam with solid 440 Chrysler lifters in my 330 & am in the Process of the same thing only bigger cam for my 291... Will prolly go with the old ISKY Cross Flo~3 cam specs

DE SOTO - Thanks for your input and help with this matter. I placed the call yesterday to get the original cam re-ground.
