My Kenwood radio is iPod compatible (like a lot of other radios on the market now). All I need to connect my iPod to it is to buy an adaptor cable which you plug at the back of the stereo (you hook the other end to the iPod, which you can put for instance in your glove box). Only problem is, this adaptor cable costs $99, so I haven't bought one yet. I may never buy one in fact, CDs and MP3 CDs suit me just fine.

I'll get some pics up later, but what we're actually doing is building our own box dubbed "Bubba Tunes". Traditionally inspired box that you can plug your iPod or any MP3 player into. Listen in the car, out of the car, etc...

I have a c***ette player in the wifes car so we do it the old fashion way with a c***ette adapter, gives us the option to listen to the hundreds of c***ettes we have ac***ulated plus listen to all of our cd's we have put on the mp3 player.

I guess it depends on how "musically ****" you are. I am not very. I have one of those FM transmitters hanging off the bottom of my ipod nano. Tune the radio to a vacant station, and listen away. Sounds good to me. I can toss it in a coat pocket, and ride in my chick's car, ride in my truck, my other cars, etc. For the rod, you could use an old-looking am/fm radio. Or even an old AM radio, with a hidden FM converter. That would be cool.

If your in a Coupe this might be a good solution..

I don't have any headunit in my Coupe but I have one of these and I hope my car isn't to loud..but these are pretty loud and its easy to put it away when your at a show..I plan on installing a cigrette lighter (Hidden) so I can plug it in for long trips,,When its charged it lasts 3 hours and it keeps your Ipod Charged.. Just a thought and a quick solution...

I bought my wife one of these for Christmas last year, and this is the one gift she uses non-stop! It was about $20 or so delivered, plugs right into the headphone jack on the IPOD, and runs off of a single AA or AAA battery (can't remember which) and she LOVES IT!

All you have to do is tune the radio to one of 4 stations, turn this thing on, and it'll broadcast directly to those frequencies.

Now, it doesn't work perfectly on ALL radios, as we have a couple of cheapie portables that don't pick up the signal very well, but most all of them work great! Best of all, you don't even have to use a "IPOD COMPATIBLE" radio.

i have a 2-channel amp ($80) under the seat in the 59, and one stock-sized speaker ($10, 4x9?) in the stock dash location and that's it. It sounds great, just like an old radio! Of course, I'm using an iRiver and it doesn't need a power source like an iPod and can go 40+ hours on a single battery

I use the same thing Evil has. Also works great in a hotel room or in the tent at the "Bend in the Road" or sitting in the shade on the bank of the river with a fishing pole and cooler of beer.

Mine is a 30gig IPOD and I have "CARS", "Pirates of the Carribean" and the "South Park World Of Warcraft" episode and others on it to keep kids busy when you need them out of your hair along with 150 or so complete albums. It's about 1/2 full.

BTW, let your Co-Pilot run the IPOD. It's a little too attention absorbing when you're driving. Let them answer the phone too. There have been enough crashed hot-rods.

In my opinion, this is the best possible solution for a hidden audio system:

    1. iPod... latest generation with docking port on bottom
    2. Amp
    3. iPod dock to RCA cable
    4. Sub control volume knob

It's simple. Hide the amp under a seat and wire up some speakers. Run the iPod dock to RCA cable from the amp to the Ipod. Your iPod is now the source - the battery charges off your car battery and you can control the tunes through the iPod itself.

That said, there is one issue - when you use the iPod dock connector, you lose control of the volume. That ****s, right? But there is a work around... Simply get yourself one of these:

    http://www.mjmautoinnovations.com/remotecontrol.htm

Mount this thing under the dash somewhere and you now have volume control...

Once tidy, you have a good sounding system that is completely hidden...

That's what we are after in the Fleetline. Hidden but modern. I never listen to the radio, all they do is talk talk talk.......

I don't have that problem with the iRiver. I just plug it into the amp with an RCA cable, set the amp volume to something comfortable, then I can control the volume up and down with the MP3 player itself. Works great and it's easy plug and play.

John, I know you already have an iPod, but for everyone else, iRivers cost a fraction of what iPods cost, hold just as much, require fewer accessories, and come with a built in FM receiver (although I haven't figured ouut how to tune in yet). The 1GB players are the size of a spark plug (actually a lipstick tube, but that wouldn't be very manly of me to say that). When I'm at a show, I can just stick the player in my pocket and no one would ever know I have modern tunes.

this is the one I have. I got it NEW on ebay for about $70, but they're a lot cheaper now. They have different models and larger capacities now. Elizabeth has one, too. They've been working great for over a year now... I even left it in the garage all winter in sub zero weather and it works perfectly.

Ryan hit the nail on the head here. This is excactly what I did to my car and it rocks! The biggest advantage is you can hide evertything and have rock'n tunes.

IPod? What's an IPod? Smithy's and the whine of the Muncie make all the music I need.

OK, I just got through buying the stuff for the Fleetline tonight. I went a different direction than stated above.

I bought an Alpine head unit that is a tuner/MP3/IPOD compatible. It has a serial port in the back for an ipod or other m*** storage device. I bought an 80GB portable hard drive to store all the tunes on. I'll let you know how it works out.

    Thanks for the responces Guys.

Evel good idea and how's the sound??

Hellfish, yea we have a few of the Ipods and each with it's own flavor in music. The wife kids and me have our greatest hits and more .. They work out great for us and would be nice to move it from car to car..

Ryan, that's what I was looiking for a clean set-up with no radio. Also hidden except the volume control knob.. Very Nice!

Saoutlaws, I like the idea of doing it all on the Ipod, were do you get such a cord??

    Thanks John

You can control everything from the ipod if just connect the iPod to the amp from the headphone jack. That's fine, but it has two limitations:

    1. The sound isn't as good as it could be
    2. The battery on the iPod will not charge unless you run a second (car adaptor) wire to the iPod.

#2 was most important for me... That's why I always use a setup that connects to the iPod's dock connection... It's also why I have to hide a volume knob somewhere...

In my 64 Impala I have a Pioneer Premier head unit that was i-pod ready. The i-pod adapter kit was around $60. The adapter was a small box that I mounted under the dash. It had a 4-pin cable that connected to the back of the radio, ignition power, and ground. It has a long cable for the i-pod which I put in the glove box. You control the i-pod through the head unit or remote. The head unit shows song ***le and artist and it even charges the i-pod. I'm happy with that set up

In my daily I have an ipod ready Alpine. F'n hate it. It can't shuffle songs worth a ****. My largest playlist has over 1500 songs and I hear the same stuff over and over again.
In my beater I have the ipod connected directly to the amp. This works great!

So you don't even have a head unit? This is a great Idea. The only thing I don't like is you are using the Ipod battery to run itself. So it wont stay charged. I wonder is there a way to use the Ipod connector wired to a battery source.

I like the idea of a system with no head unit.
