i know there are some factory colors that look kinda like pagan gold candy (pt cruiser makes a nice gold), some coppers, and some other colors that look very similar to candies, without being a "true" candy,,,,does anyone know of any nice looking factory greens or lime gold looking colors?...

Volkswagen had a cool mint green color a couple years ago, saw a lot of new beetles with that. Also, Honda has some crazy electric colors for the element.

I'm gonna use the new cream white that chrysler has. Looks alot like wimbleton but a "tad" creamier.

a lot of the candy looking new colors are kind of candies atleast in the paint system i use (sikkens) the pt cruiser color is a 3 stage the candy looking chrysler red is a 3 stage. alot of the colors use a base color of heavy metalics and a candy pearl top color to give it the depth.

also the way a color looks will have a lot to do with the painter in how he lays out the metalics and pearls.

think back to the color on my 50 caddy then think of any 2000's ford van same color and formula but sprayed to make the metalics pop.

I'm always lookin' at the new cars for colors I could use one day.....Toyota has some great colors....I used Toyota millenium gold on my Chevy PU...(see avitar)....Honda also has a nice gold along with the PT cruiser gold.........I once used a 90's Mustang color called Lazer red, it's a really good "poor man's" candy apple red.....well worth checking out.....

  10. Got a 96 Miata that is "Montego Blue". In the sun it looks green in the shade it looks blue. Also have a 84 Honda Goldwing that is dark blue and in the sun has all kinds of little sparkly things waaay down in the paint .. forget the name of it but can find out ...

Any painters got a clue on keeping the "Tint" consistant? Thats the main problem with real candys. HOK has a secondary line of candys thats a lot easier to use and doesn't need the catalyst. Are the tri-coats as consistant?

Dino.the basecoat tri-coats are a lot more user friendly and easier to match if you ever have to do a repair.I use PPG.

  13. I've noticed some late model Ford Rangers that were a nice "kind of" apple green? Sort of candy looking.

Nothing looks like candy paint, like candy paint!
Even factory tri-coat doesn't. I call it cheat candy.
I painted a GTO a few years back, and priced out doing it in the Caddy Tricoat red. Actually would have cost more than the HOK real candy I wound up using.
Jim, there are "ways" to get base clear paints to look a bit better, but nothing looks like the real thing. There are ways to cheat and spray candy a little easier...less chance of blotching, or striping, but it still takes experience and careful gun control to make it look right.
    In short...no easy way out.

  15. I wanted lime and there are a bunch of new cars using it: Honda, Kia, Mitsu (I think), VW (but way too popular) so I went with Saturn. 2004 Saturn Lime, used only one year on the Ion and Vue. I used a matt clear instead of gloss and it looks like velvet. I absolutely love it.

on my sickle i used some copper colored basecoat, followed with aztec gold pearl, the gold pearl really made it happen. not claiming it looks like candy, but the pearl is easy to spray.

That's what we used on ours. It looked much "creamier" before we did the striping and lettering.

It looks pure white until you park it next to a white car, then you can see the cream tone in it.

i too use sikkens paint and a couple of times what i did was, i laid down some scallops in metallic, and then went to the solid colormap book and found a solid color close to the metallic color, you have to mix the color in a single stage formula and not the basecoat formula, mix it up in clear and top coat the scallops with the tinted clear. basically what candy is, tinted clear. by doing this you can make any color a candy color. i'm sure you could do the same with other brands also. i've never done a whole car using this process, but i can't see why it can be done. HOK is the nicest candy paint, but not as user friendly or cost efficient as the ppg candy.

Triumph has a color they call Roulette green, it's like a lime green with gold pearl in it. pictures don't do it justice, swing by a Triumph dealer to see it person.

Jim you can borrow my thousands of color chips to pick one out if you like. HOK's candy basecoat line is the cheat candy that many have referred to. Still doesn't give the effect of a true candy job though.
