Kinda interesting really... but whats the beef with 4 door cars? I love 4 doors cars, i have a family and it makes it easier for me...

Im working on 2 4-door 54' chevys and sombody stopped me at the gas station and said "You should have bought a 2 door.. i about damn smacked him.

You can get these (54's) and others for cheap compared to 2 doors and there almost identical in everyway, same lines, same trim, etc. Shave the door handles and you probably wont be able to tell from 15 ft away.

I know he was being rather rude, and thats fine, people are sometimes, but even on here, people hate on the 4 door cl***ics alittle.

    Whats the beef?

  2. Proportions aren't as good, they weren't hotrodded "back in the day" because they had a "Grandma car" stigma. This thread will close soon.

Most 4 doors don't have the same lines as the 2 door models. Generally speaking.
It all went back to the days of being single with no families.
It just wasn't cool to drive a four door, station wagon or a truck.
We are talking back in the early to mid 60's here and probably inot the 50's too.

I am doing a 57 ford 4 door for my wife right now. Great family cl***ic cars. They have always been considered the "grocery getter" family cars and people just can't seem to shake it. I guess they just do not feel a "hot rod" or true cl***ic can be a 4 door. Guys like you and me who want to be able to have cool family cars can get these for far less and enjoy them just as much. I would have told the ****er at the gas station get back in his minivan and go build himself a car.

I think you answered your own question in the third paragraph. A two door holds more value.

In my opinion and the way I was raised - a true hot rodder/kustom builder will always cruise a 2 door for many reasons. I was told really young that only Gangsta lowrider, family cars, and old folks push 4 doors.

    I don't hate but I won't drive one.

4 doors are vital! If there were no 4 doors, where would we get parts! ;)

Hopefully this year our '36 4 door will be back on the road.

People don't like 4-doors for the same reason you like them: they're for family folks!

Also, the fact that they're easier to find makes having one/seeing one not as exciting (to me anyway), but hey, to each his own!

    exactly,
in the past you would be made fun of for driving a closed car at all....and a 4 door sedan.....phew...dont wana get caught dead in one of those!

times seem to be changing because of availability and cost but i think deep down people will never put a 4 door on the same level as other body styles

of course there is one sitting at my house :(
I just outnumbered it with roadsters so I felt better ;)

They weren't hotrodded for a simple reason...WEIGHT. Weigh a door and it's ***ociated hardware. Multiply by 2. 'Nuff said! :)

Id wager that if you can't tell the difference between a shaved 2 dr ht and a 4 dr sedan from 15 feet away, that you were possibly introduced to cars the very minute you typed your first post here.

Wait 'till you put a ton of time and $ into your 4-door, go to sell it, and can only get a fraction of it back because it's still a 4-door.

    You'll learn to dislike them.

If you want a coupe, roadster, two door, or even truck..... the four door is no subs***ute. If you just want a nice-looking hot rod with the convenience of two too many doors, the four door is a good option. If you're building it to sell though you had better be very careful about what you buy & how much you spend on it.

From '32 to '40 I'd take a Fordor as quickly as I would a Tudor. I think the porportions are super on those Early Fords. Admittedly, I have a harder time getting excited about '50's & '60's four doors. I love mine (below, on the U-Haul). It should serve me & my family well when it hits the road.

I actually prefer the body lines on some 4 door hard tops.[56 ,57chevy,55,56,57 buicks]. In the past I prefered 2 doors but kind of like the 4 doors now. Just what you like. When I was in high school in the 60's a guy had a 56 chevy 4 dr hrd top with the back doors welded up and used the 2 dr doors on it. it was a nice custom. If you like it build it.

If cheap and available and holding more people is what makes a car more appealing to you, well, have at it and don't let other people piss on your parade.
Four doors can be cool, but two are almost always preferred. Why? Mainly, I'm sure, is because four portals infers you are toting 'lil Johnny to the scout meeting and picking up 'lil Susie from her under water basket weaving cl***. Two doors implies a vehicle that was designed for the driver in mind.

The Honda generation has made fordors more accepted, if not down right preferred. GASP
Growing up in the 70's it seemed that, by in large, Europeans hot rodded mordors simply out of availability. Always seemed so alien.

Yeah, four doors can be "alright", but I'll take a 2 door thank you.

Hell before you were about to smack him ..I'd say well if your so concerned with what i spend my money on why dont you ****in buy me a 2 door.

BTW I love my 4 door. I got dogs and a Kid..I like the space, I like that i dont have to open my door and lift my seat to let some one out of the back seat..I like alot about my 4 door..
I got my 2 door cars too...but never changes my stand on my 4 door

It's the way we were raised, part of our religion. If your entire peer group growing up over many years considered 4 drs to be grandmas cars that we were embarr***ed to be seen driving, then you might be able to understand. Peer pressure is a heavy thing.

Your peer group has a new and different opinion. You can't convert me to your way and I can't convert you to mine. Just accept the fact that we don't agree and don't get offended by my thoughts.

I've had a few 4dr Willy's and a couple of 4dr Woodies but that is as far as I can go.

I like 4 doors! I drive a 4 door late model Ford truck and the wife hauls the kids around in a 4 door toyota sedan.

But for a hot rod, I prefer a 2 door because I prefer the looks of a 2 door better (even willing to sacrifice some convience for it).

However, I would never tell you or anyone else that I'm not into 4 doors for hot rods. If you like em, that's your thing. :D

I don't care what you do to it, there is no such thing as a 4-door hot rod. Because station wagons haven't been built in any volume over the last 20 years, they have crawled out of the pit of the uncool. I'd take a wagon myself. But 4-doors just ****.

id rather have a 4 door, i dig big cars, they ride better, they look better,
and they get respect/fear, on the highway, would you cut off a he****?
hell no! would you cut off a 68 caddie 4 door? are you crazy!

i like the intimidation value of a big car or big truck.
