    Hello everybody,

I have some problem with my early bendix-drive. I bought one new modern barrel type bendix-drive and didn´t know that this wouldn´t fit on my starter shaft wich is 1/2" and not 5/8 as the new one is.

I also bought one new flywheel ring but now I don´t if this is going to fit with my old starter drive.

Does anybody know if there was any changes on the flywheel in the middle of 1928. They changed the starter shaft from 1/2" to 5/8 so how about the flywheel.

I read the info about sizes on the starter shafts on Brattons webpage and of course after I already had put my order to Snyders.

Thanks for any help or suggestion.
    /Andy

You NEED the Service Bulletins badly! AND the '28-32 parts book, both available from Bratton.
I believe all ring gears are the same.
Do you WANT the early starter for some reason?? it will be much easier to toss it and get the later one, which is very common...
I think this is the starter that was released with a non-bendix drive, then a special bendix was supplied as a service item...none of this stuff is available except as a fleamarket find.
If you do want to fight with it, there has been some discussion on the Ford Barn group...search mechanism is very crude, so you will probably have to search just "starter", wait a long time til search is FULLY loaded, then sort through the titles...

    Hi Bruce,
Thanks again for your info and comments.
I will toss the old starter away for a newer one.
My concern was/is for the ring gear if it would fit my flywheel because the modern bendix-drive gear is bigger in diameter than my old one.
I think I have to count the teeths and measure the diameter on the ring gear before I make any bigger adjustments.

I seem to remember shims being needed for the swap--Bratton's will have those. Get hold of a copy of the service bulletins, I also recommend Victor Page's book and the 1928-1932 parts books, all readily available from repro parts places. If yo have an early '28, you really need the info on all the changes and odd parts. Bruce

What do you meen with shims? I know what shims is but where to put them?
I will place an order asap on the books.
My idea in the future is to swap the chassi for a new av8 chassi and keep the body as much original that i can.
But this will not happen this year.
Until next year I wan´t atleast drive the car original, therfore I don´t wanna spend to much money on it. But, with problem with this starter that I can´t rely on I have to change If I don´t want to be stranded beside the highways.

    Thanks Bruce

I wouldn't throw out the old starter-- the restoration boys like that early stuff.

I know I used to be one.... and still have a couple of Stock A Models.

The available shims go between starter and engine to space gear properly...I think they were for this exact swap, though I have not gone into the bulletins to verify that yet.

Of course I don´t throw away the old starter, I will just put it on my shelf.
    Maybe somebody want it.

    Bruce
I got myself a newer starter yesterday. I don´t know the condition of it but it´s tested and still works. Maybe I have to change brushes or so but that´s no problem and I will also change the drive for the new barrel-type drive.

I will take a look in the bulletins for the shims.

    Thank you!
