If they are as good as they used to be, they are pretty good. My dad still has a set from when I was a little kid (I'm 35 now), and he still uses it. The regs in that photo look a bit different from Dad's Craftsman set, but the torch handle looks very similar (except his has a black handle instead of bare brass).

The Victor set will be easier to find parts & accessories for in the future, and for that price, I'd hang on to the Sears card and get something else. Just my 2¢... since you asked! :D

  5. see if a buddy needs something at sears and cash you out. from my experience takes lots of hours using a torch to wear them out unless your using it as a slag hammer!

    Check out craftsman.com
they may carry victor and let you order it online. I get the tool catalog all the time and there is a lot of stuff that's not in the store.. but either way I'm not scared of using craftsman stuff....

  9. I replaced the regulators on my Marquette torch set when my house flooded in 78.

Bought a pair of regulators from Sears in 78 and they're still going strong.

I can't remember who it was for certain who manufactures the cutting/welding outfits for sear you just might be getting a Victor set anyway!I think at one time they were made by pure ox my brother in law has had a craftsman set since 1960 never had a problem with it and he gets his tips etc.at a local welding supplier under the brand name of the manufacturer

  11. I have had my Craftsman torch with 2 stage regulators since 1970 and it still works just fine. My torch actually still had the Victor labels on it even though it was sold as a Craftsman. I don't know whether that is still true today.

I have used a Sears two stage regualator set for over 30 years. I replaced one regulator. I would not even consider buying a Victor if something did go wrong with this one. Sears could not fix my bad regulator, so they sold me a new one for what they would charge to fix my old regulator.

I have a Craftsman setup and they are manufactured by Harris. I my opinion, they are as good as Victor.

That's what I was thinking. I had received a variable Sears brand speed rotory tool as a gift and came to realize it not only looked like a Dremel brand but it was a Dremel brand tool.

try to find out who makes the current torch for craftsman. it's all too common to say items made today aren't what they used to be, especially of the chinese crap. so where people are telling you they had their craftsman for over twenty years, and they may as well had, i can almost gaurantee it's not the same torch they're selling today.

Yea, Sears manufactures NOTHING! They just buy from other manufactures and brand it Craftsman.

Nothing wrong with that, itmeans you are probably getting a name brand product anyway, and they stand behind thier stuff pretty well. I assume they still do since the KMart buy out.

Over the years thay have sold Cushman and Vespa Scooters, Puch Motorcycles, Henry J Automobiles. etc..

I went to the local welding supply to buy a part for a 40 year old Craftsman set and the salesman said over the years Sears has used dozens of suppliers. Maybe he was exaggerating a little. But he could not get the part I needed from any of his suppliers.

I'd go with the major brand name torch, and save your gift certificate for nice Craftsman hand tools.

That picture is of a Harris outfit. You can buy supplies at any reputable welding supplier.

I'm pretty sure that Harris is the same torch that Lincoln uses in their kit/outfit/set.. whatever you call it...

I have a Sears Craftsman set I bought new in 1978. They are just a repackaged Harris torch. Never had a problem.

Yep, that does look exactly like my Harris torch. I got mine at Wards about 35 years ago. They work fine but the handle is a big if you are welding on sheet metal for any length of time. Big as in quite a bit larger than a Victor and somewhat heavy. for cutting they are great. I have always wanted to put hose splitters on mine and get a a Victor aircraft torch handle for welding sheet metal.
