Fix or replace the electric motor. My 7&1/2 horse motor did the same last week. I took it to the shop and had it fixed. He replaced
an internal switch, 1 end brg. for $75.00. Cheapest new mtr. I found
    was $500.00

is it belt drive?pull the belt and turn it on see if it runs.can you spin the pump by hand?i would stay away from anything smaller than a5hp,a 5hp 60 gal unit that can give you 13 -18cfm will do anything you want at home the price goes up of course but in the end you get what you pay for.i would look towards the ingersol or an industrial air unit.they can be found around 8 bills.i know it sounds like alot but you will thank me later, stay waaayyyy away from the direct drive oil frees (craftsman)unless you like useless noise!

I Didnt have a large ammount of money and needed a compressor to run my sandblaster so i picked a belt drive from atwoods for 450, its a 60 gallon with a 5 horse on it and im happy with it.

I agree on the direct drive ones they make me want to beat my head against a wall.

I agree with Meddler1, Figure out what failed. I got an IR 5HP 80 gal for $100 because the guy said it quit. It still spun so $125 later after a motor rebuild I've got the $800+ compressor.

Sorry if I'm to simplistic but If everything turns remove the belt spin the compressor pulley & see if there's any resistance/compression (maybe remove the outlet side fitting) Just isolate the failure & go from there.

I had a problem with my craftsman and it turned out to be the capacitor or however you spell it. It was tripping the breaker all the time. Try Google "why does my craftsman aircompresser trip my breaker" there are about 3 or 4 good treads about it.

a capacitor is a device that stores electrical power so that it will be available when a surge of power is needed. Like when a compressor starts up. It is usually a plastic cylinder, often with a cover on it, on the side of the motor.

It's been a while but they used to run about $10. Grainger or any electrical supply out fit would carry it. Your problems, however, sound more like the run windings in the motor.

make sure you match the micro farads and voltage that is printed on the side of it,not all are the same.that is definitly a cheap fix, also some single phase motors have two one is a start and one is a run unit, they store energy to help keep all three sets of windings in the motor running.it kinda sounds like the run capacitor to me,because like you said it tries to start but wont run you will have to ask a motor shop wich one is wich if you have two.either way they are super cheap probably under 15 bucks for both.good luck.
