Not like its a big deal, Not like its Tech week, but hey Its better then an O/T post or some **** like whats this worth or look at my freaking boat. This is the HAMB damn it! Post Car stuff and ONLY car stuff......even if its as lame as this, LOL.
So Bil split the wish bone from his '38 Ford Pick up. He cut off the front spring perch bosses and the rear castings. I machined up a pair of bungs / slugs to fit into the ends of the wishbones and threaded them to take these aircraft hiem joints I boosted from PanAm when I worked there with Bil, They cam off a 707 front landing gear asy. as I remember. we press fit them into the bones leaving a small gap to weld and get good "penetration"
like i said not a big deal but hey in 45 min's we did something. look at the pics throw rocks at us and laugh, we did!

Fritz I'm also an ex Pan Am mechanic. Sure do miss all those Hangar 14 aircraft parts and materials that could be used on automotive projects.

Dan,....You can get those parts from speedway, we just made 'cause we had the steel and a lathe!

G-Man, I was at JFK Hanger 19 / dept#348 paint shop I painted the 747's in the pac stand & letter'd the Clipper names on the nose! Yah I miss the machine shop, chrome shop & the sandblasting shop. we used to get complete car frames in there! Poncho Bil was on the floor Air frame & Powerplant. Met Bil here on the HAMB. go figure

What are the plans for this project? chopped ? Channeled?

  8. Plans... ?
We have a pic from StreetRodder magazine pinned to the wall of a '39 pickup from the Northwest.
That would be the extent of formal inspiration.

The rest, we're just kinda winging it.
The gist of build is: as cheap as possible.
Use what I already have. Spend no money. M***age it ‘till it works.
    It’ll be unchopped.
Channeled the height of the frame rails, 5in.
Lowered with $20 dropped axle and a Model A front cross member and a reverse-eyed spring to be figured out later.
Reuse the front portion of the frame rails and X members, then fab the rest.
I’ll use the ’39 grill, hood and hood sides… lose the fenders
The back will be a totally different and handmade.
It will have window gl***, wipers, heat and defroster.
Probably steel rims with tall black walls all around.
Oh… and a paint job. Maybe even some tasteful striping.
It’s gonna be simple and have a good stance.
    Bil

p.s. You guys got it made

  9. Gman- I worked the hangar floor from 83 to 88 or so at Hgr.14 and Hgr.19 I spent a little time in the Jet Center when they opened up MIA and seniority migrated south. Then I went to LGA when they started the shuttle. Now I'm back at the Worldport... but it ain't the same.
Those were the good ol' days for sure. I'm glad I got to have some.
    Bil
