I want to see some Y-Blocks! Any of you have pictures? I have a 54 ford with the y in it still, and i want to run it till it dies! I dont know much about these blocks so what tips do you have? what mods do you have? What suggestions can i get to converting to dual exhaust?
Dont hold me to this but I belive 54 lincolns came with factory dual exhaust.. something to look into..
Is it a 239, 272, or 292? You might want to search some of the forums for info on compatibility of speed parts versus the various engine sizes. As far as dual exhaust, there aren't really any "kits" readily available to my knowledge, so you're probably gonna have to drive over to an exhaust shop. Red's headers has some performance stuff also. Google is your friend.
'54 would be a 239 ... As for dual pipes you will need to block off the cross over under hood which looks ugly.. Or change to truck or T~Bird manifolds that came stock dual. Just do a search on the 'Bay for Y~BLOCK.. Lotsa stuff including the manifolds. Or better yet, Go to some swap meets &/or junk yards as they made Y~Blocks well into the '60s in trucks. My Daughter has a '55 with dual exhaust, Those early Fords have a sound all there own !
within the last week i remember seeing a factory driver's side dual exhaust manifold on the e-pay site. like the previous guy said, this will allow you to do away with the cross-over pipe.
I had a 272 in a 56 panel, when I would apply brakes going downhill (approaching a stop) in the neighborhood I lived in, the oil in the pan would rush to the front and leave the sump dry, oil light would come on. Didn't pay it much mind until a couple years later when the crank broke in half (still running, until I turned it off). Can't see it on this replacement engine, but the pan and sump pickup tube had 2" added for a deeper sump to alleviate this from happening again.
Those are the manifolds you want to hunt for. The ones that don't have the cross over pipe. I always liked the Y blocks ever since my former stepfather had a 52 Ford Hardtop with a 56 Thunderbird special in it. One fast car in it's day. And the pipes had a sound all their own.
You can find exhaust manifolds on ebay that exit at rear of engine for reasonable prices. I found a set of Ram Horns for my 292.
I've never seen any dual manifolds at a "reasonable price" on Ebay. Most I've ever seen when you have shipping included go for nearly or over $200. A set of Reds Headers are like $295 and slightly over $300 and that seems like a better deal to me. I'm looking though for a set of manifolds for my '56 272 Vicky. My nephew said he found a set and I'm waiting on him to tell me what the deal is.
A buddies' chopped '40 bobber - 292 with Tbird valve covers, rare six duece Weiand Drag Star intake, Strombergs with spacers. Now has carb scoops. 3 speed trans. Thing hauls... -KK
I have everything you may want! PM me.. Make sure the 1-4 side is getting oil! put a 57 or newer dist, Don't go to big on carb, they run better with small ones. Good luck.
I'm building 3 Y-Blocks for my project cars right now.. going to get another this weekend from a fellow HAMB'er... Y-blocks kick ass! The one I'm building for my daily driver is a '55 Bird 292 with big valve heads with the works, bored .060 over, steel crank, truck rods, .448 lift Isky cam, Forged pistons etc etc.. A couple of things to watch with Y-blocks... The cam bearings tend to turn or get clogged up with sludge not letting oil get to the rocker shafts. The valvetrain is 'heavy' and won't rev like a SBC.. '54 239 & 256 Y-blocks are off to themselves as the cam is different(bigger jounals) All that said, they put out a lot of torque and the bottom end is very stout. Keeping the oil changed often will help keep the cam passages clean. These motors are damn reliable, just check the valve lash every so often. The last Y-block powered car I had would give 5.0 Mustangs and 90s Camaros a fit...
Even if they did, it wouldn't help this guy since Lincoln Y blocks are totally different than Ford and Merc Y blocks. I had a 272 (2 bbl, dual exhaust) in my 57 before it ate itself and I swapped it out. Bitch ran pretty good and sounded awesome. I have a lot of parts, so if anybody needs anything I might have it
If you want to use stock dual exhaust manifolds (55 and up)and have a stick trans, you have to get a 55 - 56 dual exhaust "Z" or cross clutch bar. For an automatic and stock dual exhaust manifolds, I believe the only way is to make up something custom or use the stock (54) left side manifold and fabricate a pipe that runs down the front and back. Here's my 54
here's my 292 stroker. Still not back in the 55bird yet. Made 310hp at 5500rpm, 295 ft lbs torque. still had some more to go. you can go to www.y-blocksforever.com if you want see more.
Actually, other have done better and pretty easily-the difference is you can't buy parts quite as cheap and easy as the sbc variety-so you have to do sound head work and machine work. And of course if you build it strong enough you can use nitrous or a blower as results have shown much more. Only takes time and money!
Here's my daily driver '64 F100 with a 292 in it. Manual says it makes 160 hp and 270 lb/ft torque. Not bad for a stock motor! 1964 was the last year they made these awesome nostalgic engines! They have a very unique, sweet exhaust note! If anyone wants to here mine with the headers and a true dual exhaust setup with a set of Magnaflows, just ask!
An exhaust system is probably the best 'upgrade' you can do for these engines. Especially if you have the original exhaust with the crossover pipe that wraps around the front of the engine and goes into the passenger side manifold. Let me tell you, after I finished welding up the new exhaust system, it really turned on the old Y-block. So nice...
im thinking of running a 272 on my model A.anyone have a 2 2barrel intake?who else is running a y block in their hot rod?
I built a car for a friend that loves Y blocks. After driving the car for a while now I'm hooked. My 34 was supposed to get a nailhead but now will get a nice 292. Here's the motor in his 29 coupe. Clark
The Y Block in our 54 Lincoln. Not aware of "duals" on a factory Lincoln. Heck there's no room under there!!!!
