I have a set of California Smooth bumpers for a 56 Chevy project I'm doing. I want to make some mods to them, but have been told to have them stripped first. What is the process, and what chems.
    are needed?

I don't think that is an easy home process. the Chrome shops take it pretty much the same way they put it on.

I have heard that it can be baked off in one of the high heat ovens that some automotive machine shops use to bake the crud out of blocks and heads. the problem woud be finding one big enough.

I know how to strip them, but how can you do it at home?
Muratic acid will take the chrome off down to the nickle or white br*** that is under it,but what do you do with the acid?
I worked on the chrome plater for Ford in Monroe Michigan for a few years, this is where we plated all there bumpers and GT wheels from 1957 till late 70s(epa put an end to that)
I would look for a plater in your town,he can strip them real fast and he has the equipment to do it SAFE. Acid is nobodys friend.
    Good luck

I've seen brick layers wash the whole outside of buildings with Muratic Acid, and then wash it down to the ground. What's up
with that? Can't I just neutralize it with baking soda? It works
for acid stomach. It works to clean **** off acid batterys. Or is
it the chromium that I need to deal with more than acid?

I've had some chrome stripped at a plating shop and it was real cheap to have them do it.

muratic acid is too weak to strip chrome-must use sulfuric acid. Here is a link to all of the fun you could ever want to get into trying to strip chrome or nickel. Make sure you wear your best pants when you attempt this!

you can isolate parts that are oversized such as a bumper by using clay dams and plastic sheeting tough enough that won't get eaten so you won't have to use so much fluid/acid.
