Im interested to hear what the guys that are or have run into the 10s in their street driven cars are running mechanically.
526 roller big block chevy with a 4spd 4.10 gears 28"x10 tire 13.5 to 1 comp car was more about bulling it to go that fast then the ch***is working. car was slow for the motor it had.
I built an O/T car that was 3545#, 454 +.100 (477) 14.1:1, .714 roller, 1050 Dominator. Had risers on the heads to run stock valve covers, smoothed off the DART logo on the intake and painted it flat black like the rest of the motor. Ran a BHJ 7" balancer and told everyone it was a .100 over 402. 1st p*** netted 10.88 running outta fuel from a bad pump. Got it deep into 10.60s. Never got hot, had unreal manifold vac at idle and low RPM (never figured out why). That summer local law dogs were just taking cars from ppl for hangin out at a coffee shop (!!??!!). I lettered it up and went bracket racing. The most reliable 725HP motor we'd ever seen. The valve springs lasted over 300 p***es due to oil provisions. I didn't completely block the back p***eges, left the o-rings off the restrictors and o-ringe the dizzy. I had to add an electric water pump to manage heat...that is to get it hot enough to stage and make power. I'd stage at 170deg, turn on the pump, at the end of the run it'd be down to 160. I cleaned all the water p***ages had a plate on the water pump vanes, painted everything semi-flat black except for a few chrome things for style, and in general built it for easy service sessions. The best ET was 10.32 @ 130mph with a trap RPM of 7800. I guess I kinda miss that car...
I have run 10.74 @ 125.4 with my 1967 "Pro-Street" Nova. It has a 383 stroker that makes about 500 HP. Car has a 4 link with a Dana 60, 4.11 gears. With some sorting out I think the car can go in the 10.60's. No problems on the street mechanically. I originally had a mechanical roller cam in it but that did not go well on the street, broke a pushrod and ****tered the motor. Put a solid lifter cam in. Gave up some horsepower but no problems. Motor has been in there for 3 years now. Only run the car a couple of times a year at the track. From April until December I cruise on the street at least twice a week.
Not quite in the 10's, but both my uncle and brother run deep 11's off the street. One is a 70 Nova, the other is a 72 Monte Carlo (big car). Both are stock ch***is, turbo 400 trans, and chevy 350's (.030 over). Both have a full interior, all gl***, etc, and can be driven anywhere.
Full fendered 1931 Model A Roadster... 355 rollered SBC, 4-Webbers on Moon Racing manifold/Turbo 400, 3,500 stall & Q/C 3.74 ratio... 10.92 at 123mph W/1.59 60ft. & 6.95 1/8th mile 2,350 LBS. on Pump Gas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "No Cage"= 1st and last run... but "Oh what Fun"...!!! Hopefully my 1930 Roadster with a stock Olds 455 will be in that range soon... that ran 12.02 @ 110 with "Severe traction" issues...! Presently I'm fitting it for a "Cage" so I won't be a "One Time Wonder"...! Funny thing is that there were a pair of coupes out there running similar e.t.s without cages and they ran all day....! The last time I checked... the original coupe tops are'nt any safer than my roadster top bows... but they didn't stop them from racing!!! "Oh Well"...!!! __________________
I want my Austin to do that, does that count? Injected .30 thou over 401 nailhead (Blown if the $$$ fairy is nice to me). Ask QQMoon, his fantastic coupe runs in the 10s!
Yer a nut. I have seen way too many upside down cars at the local Saturday night drags to be complacent about safety.
I have two OT cars that run 10.99 or better: www.fquick.com/prostockjohn 1998 Formula, stock cubes, 8:1, 88mm turbo, etc. 9.4@144 on drag radials with 93 pump and 112 unleaded. 2000 Camaro, stock cubes, 11:1, 10.92@122 on motor on 93 pump, and 10.008@133 on 150 shot same timing and some race gas. This car can be driven every day and to the track and back.
87 Buick Turbo Regal. 3,700 lbs with me in it. On 93 octane gas on DOT Drag Radials through the mufflers. Fully optioned with working AC, power windows... etc.. Car ran 10.71 @ 126 mph with only a 1.65 60 ft. time. It's also a show car.
10's? Hell I see street legal cars doing 9s and even 8s (Anderson's 4dr Rambler) a few times a year. I work for (OT) NMCA and we have a cl*** "True Street". These cars have to go out on a cruise after tech (registration, insurance, working lights, etc.). BTW: What's up ProStock John? met you at the LSX last year...Going to Atco or Memphis this year? Aaron
My brothers daily last year was a 72 Maverick Grabber mid 10 second car all day long.. what a ride. Dont know all the specs on it but it was a 393 stroked sbf with a 4speed built 9inch and it hauled ***.. no honda around here can come near it. and it made Fox bodys and Camaros look like fools..
Here's a Video of my OT street car that can run 10's. http://videos.streetfire.net/video/2ed94f6c-0238-49c2-87e1-9889000d5650.htm Take a 4300 LB Impala SS and add some Nitrous and there ya go. My car is the one in the near lane. Fully licensed and insured and driven on the street
My kid's "hand-me-down" 72 1/2 Datsun ran low 11s all day long on the motor, ran 10.30s @ 135 mph on his 250 hp shot nitrous plate. Then he broke the trans and it's a lawn ornament right now. 406 SBC with AFR heads, Lunati cam, Edelbrock Victor with a Holley HP 830 on top of a nitrous plate, MSD ignition, ****** headers (YES, ****** actually made headers for these!), a West Coast Converter and a TCI THM 350 trans to a nine inch Ford with 31 spline axles & a locker. It was a four link in the rear but now has ladder bars. It has a full cage and all the good safety stuff as well. It always has been a street machine and has been driven to cruise nights.
We all know this guy... that guy... that has a 1970-2007 "blank blank" that does a million miles per hour and 2 second quarters that he drives on the street...! **** some of my 3,000+ Lb. old muscle cars run mid 8's without nitrous and yes... they were driven on the streets...! Since this is to be a traditional "Hotrod" and "Customs" board I thought that the thread opening question was pertinent to these types of cars and their drivetrains...! Hell we got everything from Datsun to viper... ( although impressive e.t.s ) ***** extenders talked about on this thread...! Could we at least keep it to "ON TOPIC" cars...???? Bring your "Off topic cars" to their appropriate boards! Thanks!!!
My first car was 67 VW that ran high 10's,and was my only means of transportation! 10.75 was the best p*** it ever made. It had a tendancy to break ****** parts and axles. Miss that car! But I know if I still had it I would just get into trouble,LOL!!! It's not uncommon to see Bugs in the 9's now. Usually turbo'd though. Mine had 48Webers. Sorry Wingnutz! I was typing while you were complaining...
I use to own a space shuttle that could do about 2.2 sec./1500mph in the 1/4 and then still had plenty left over..... wait, ****, sorry not traditional ok, my '53 Stude only does about 27 sec/53mph in the quarter but with some nitrous I might be able to get a 10 sec. time out of it.
Thanks guys, the reason I asked was there are a hundred ways to skin a cat and Im wanting the project after next which will be an A coupe to be able to push 10s, be ANDRA (NHRA) approved and able to be driven to work. Thanks for the input to date.
spend the time on the ch***is and you will need much less motor. i use to have a mid engine tube ch***is beetle built for road racing that i would also street race and take to the drag strip ran 10.20's all day long not getting out of third gear. motor was a stock 94 corvette lt1 with a computer chip. out of the 100 cars i have had it is the only one i really miss and wish i still had. thing was my daily driver for 8 months.
I had mine back in 75. Wasn't a whole lot of street cars running around my area that could touch it back then. At the street races nobody would race me except bikes, and those guys with the brand new Z28's and Trans Am's that thought were untouchable,LOL!!!!
Comes down to the race weight of your car, and how efficient a combo you want to have. What would the raceweight be? Wing, I thought about trying to make my '51 Merc run 10.9's, and I could do it, but I have to repaint this tub first. It would take about 600hp at this weight.
