I'm not saying this is what happened, but I know quite a few people that have had their cars/bikes in magazines, and the many times they won't even have 1/2 the parts the Tech sheet lists. Most the list consisted of (big suprise) advertisers' products. Also, I've seen where the owner's name isn't the actual owner's, but some buddy of the writer's. No joke. A friend turned down a magazine feature because they were going to list some buddy of their's name who was recently hospitalized rather than his.

Motorcycle and tattoo magazines are the most notorious violators.

True, but that's not what this thread is about.

"It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it."

It is possible to learn something from a "gold chainer."

What gets me is the Blown engine they featured is a Hemi "big buck" engine, that with a core must cost at least $10,000.00 of more, I can build a wjhole car for less. If I had that much money I can think of lots better ways to spend it.

I have learned many lessons from them like price and value are not the same thing throwing money at something dont make it cool. and learn how not to build a car.

I think Aman has the right idea here, There aren't many tech articles for the home builder. Most are professional rod shops installing some high end stuff using all the right equipment-kind of like Norm on This Old House. No sawdust, every tool in place, never says what is COSTS! There have been close to a dozen top chop articles in Street Rodder and Street Rod Builder in the last 5 years (I index all my car mag tech articles). How many people read that and headed for the shop to chop a top based on the information in the article? There was ONE article that showewd the same vehicle with a dozen headlight treatments-that was helpful.

I buy the mags because I like cars, or they give me a deal like HotRod for $10. Though not my style, HotRod and Car Craft have really swamped SR and SRB for articles about owner built cars and rodding on a budget. Sad.

The idea of not naming the car's owner correctly is disgraceful. Whenever I write a feature, the first thing I ask for is the owner's name - and how they spell it. Everything else is easy after that!

The Olds motor was built by John Beck at Pro Machine in Anaheim, California. The engine is going in Denny Falschleners 34 ford coupe. The 34 coupe was Dennys car that he had as a kid, after years of searching he rediscovered the car and is in the process of rebuilding it. IT is a really cool looking motor.

P.s. Denny is Jimmy Shines dad.

    That's cool.
But it still looks exactly like the one I saw in Ross' shop. I may run there today and see if it's still there.

    Hi Jimmy,

Are there any specs on that motor on the web somewhere?

    Thanks!

I'll go along with this. The older R&C from the Ganahl/Tann years were pretty good about tech ideas on a budget. Whoever sells the ads for Street Rodder does a mighty good job and from the publisher's perspective that is what is important. Hot Rod and Car Craft have really captured more of my attention lately too. Even if the car is not what i'd build, they have much better tech sections.

I quit buying magazines years ago. Seems like everytime I use to get Street Rodder or Rod&Custom they were putting a mustang front suspension under something. EVERY MONTH! Then it just got to be too much when they could never tell the difference between a 53 Chevy grille tooth and a 54 tooth. Besides, they never wanted my artwork for anything, not even a reply. I just can't relate to them anymore. :D

Sorry bro, but that’s what you get for even thinking that was a reading/look at option.

So let me get this right, Cool Guy Jimmy Shines real name is Jimmy Falschlener. I always thought how cool it was that he shared a name with the guy from Hollywood Nights. Man am I a gulible idiot.
