I'm looking to swap my 64 Galaxy over to discs and want to know which particular car/truck, if any, would make it a bolt on deal, or as close to it. Mostly interested in the front. The rear would be a bonus. Wrenches in hand and ready to hit the wrecking yards! It's a wagon and getting a little more in the "go" department and learned from past project mistakes and factoring in the "whoa!" too. God that Caddy was fast..............
almost any car that had REAR Steering ( steering linkage behind the the front cross member) cna be made to work. Many guys use 1970's & 1980's Ford Granada and Lincoln Versillies. 1978 and older Fullsized Fords Mercs, and Lincolns. 1978 and older T-birds. 1960's to early 1970's Olds and Caddy. all the above are REAR sTEER. do not look at cars that have the steering linkage in front of the the cross member , Front Steer. Most full sized GM cars from 1972 and newer are front steer, and all mid sized cars were front steer.
Do these models spindles bolt up to my control arms or is it bolting the calipers and discs onto my spindles? Ball joint and tie-rod tapers the same? Thanks for any and all input!
I have a full size 60 ford wagon i went with granada front with fatman 2"dropped spindles and linc versillies rear. the narrow Linc rear alowed me to put 295x50x15 Chrome reverse on the rear but your have to move the springs to the inside 2" you could also swap the granada spindles for a 1" drop just change ball joints
77 - 79 Thunderbird / Cougar spindles and brakes will bolt on in place of the original stuff for the front. cheers Ed N.
Ditto on the T bird and Cougar stuff.........easy swap..and the mid 80s crown vic disc brakes will work on the rear with one small spacer on a small bearing rearend. We do this all the time...common parts and easy to come by. M.
http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~stanchfi/brake-conversion-60-64.html Use 77 to 79 T bird Cougar as they have a better geometry for the spindle from what I've been told. I have them for my 64 Merc but will be doing the swap this spring
This has been covered a few times on here - did a search and here's what I found: DrDano's thread- http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=191905&showall=1 Spent's thread- http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=163485&highlight=Galaxie+disc More- http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=145393&highlight=Galaxie+disc I did the Granada spindle swap on my '62 and I'm happy with it. Also, I have to say - Galaxie is the correct spelling for your car. Malcolm
I think the disk brake package you want for the rear is from the early Panther platform cars (the current Crown Vic body style). I think the ones that are easily adaptable come from 91?-93? cars. If I recall correctly, they fit the small bearing nine incher. They are the same on both sides, so one caliper is on the front side, and the other is on the back. There was a post on here with a link to a very detailed site about a year or so ago. On another tack, Explorers have disks that can be adapted easily to some nine inchers, but need to have one particular bearing/retainer combination on the axle of the few used over the years. These are available new at pretty reasonable prices if you have the axle with the correct ends.
The spacer for the Crown Vic brakes is only to shim between the axle retainer to keep the axle from "walking" in and out...easy to make. Hard to get in, a bit on the tight side inside there, but with a bit of patience will work just fine. If using aftermarket axles, be sure to find the rotor/hat that you are going to use First.....measure the ID...and Then order the axle with the proper flange dimensions. Uses small bearing flanges and will accept 31 spline axles... M.
Thanks for all the responces, guys! Helped alot and have a shopping list to start scouring the wrecking yards with. See ya!- Stan
