Sorry for a lame question as I normally have fixed in my mind how I want things looking .... but then again I do have a flat black coupe with red wheels :)

Im picking up an 28/29 A highboy coupe next week thats all but finished. The ch***is and running gear has been beautifully prepared by the previous owner with ch***is, block etc etc painted bright red. Now Im not inclined to paint the body the same color as bright red rods seem a bit street roddy to me. I was thinking of white with maybe a so-cal style red nose but am open to suggestions ..... what else can I do?

Not sure how much of your frame we'll see? But, could you do a complimentary color body (white like you've suggested or dark blue maybe) with the same color red as a flare or strip starting at the cowl as sort of a continuation and sweeping up along the body and exiting at the rear? Just a thought.

How about a nice shiny "Battle Ship Grey" with a checkerboard pattern on the firewall, grille and light buckets. Maybe with the checks coming around the cowl edges in a waving flag pattern.

Red 'n white tuck and roll to go along with the dark to mid blue paint. Red wheels with WW's?
A light graphite silver would be an interesting alternative body colour. :)

I like silver with red, but the So Cal look sounds like it would look good also.

If its that bad for your taste why did you buy it? A deal maybe and if so did you figure a repaint in the cost of the car?.. Screw it pull it down and paint it the color you want.. I really dont like frames painted a different color of the body on a fenderless car unless its primer on the body waiting to get finished.. Now if its a fender with boards car I had a 29 c-dan years ago with a yellow frame and a lime green exterior. it was a full fender car with boards. i painted the damn thing yellow 2 times before i decided i didnt like yellow unless it was on someone elses car..:)

Thanks guys I apprecaite the input.

Sorry should have mentioned the body is almost ready for paint but hasnt had any yet.

Just a little background the guy building it is on old local rodder taht has had to sell off most of his workshop and believes due to a bad back only has one build left in him. The car was going to be fully fendered but he had bought a tudor off me last year and wants the fenders for that so it will go fenderless. It was too good a deal to walk past. Im not interested in pulling it down as its almost done and the plan is to finish it and get it on the road. I am hoping I can do the old guy proud by finishing off what he has started, then roll down his house, flip him the keys and let him drive what he almost finsihed, hence I'd like to keep the ch***is etc as is. Thanks again.

That is "BAM's" truck, here on the HAMB. (sorry the pictures are a little dark)

A red frame with black would look good IMO as long as it wasn't too overdone and you had some interior stuff to compliment and balance things out. Red and black is fine as long as it's done with taste.

I know that it's been done and sometimes very poorly but I like Olive Green (High Gloss) with red. I think that if done properly it could be really nice. I also like your idea of White or Silver. That is of course that you are dead set on not going with a red body.

How about gloss black with tan below the beltline, wheels in the same tan (wires?) Striping details on the frame where exposed to mute the bright red a bit. Pick up the red again on the body with red striping.

Black, red, white, silver, grey, those are pretty much all "safe".
On a hiboy with the frame and engine painted all painted the same, letting the ch***is be the accent and painting the body a solid colour works. Adding flames, scallops, or two tones would just distract the eye.
Be very careful of the yellows, off whites, beige in any shade, and various greens and blues. Pick the wrong one and the car will just look odd.

That said however, the "right one" could be really right. In one of the many hot rod picture books printed the last few years there is a nearly stock ch***is 28-9 Model A highboy with a small block Chev motor of some sorts. In the picture the car is beige (might be primer), the engine and ch***is are red, a little chrome is tastefully splashed around, and the interior is more or less a blanket is "thrown" over the seat.
I don't even remember what it has for wheels, but because this car has the "look" so nailed, and so intensely has it seared my brain, I am determined to build one similar.

Gold metallic (not flake) goes well with a red frame and running gear.

  23. I vote for grey. But I also think white with a variation of the SoCal treatment would work as well.

    How about an ivory color?

    Black is done-to-death and predictable.

Ivory/off white/beige would give it a nostalgic look, and you would not have the same color combo as every other car at the event.

Whoo, eye bleed red. It looks like it is time for the artists in the bunch to do some drawings of the car with the red frame and compatable paint on the body.

I wsas thinking a red SoCal type nose with a black body might work withe red ch***is.

u need to paint the motor a different color...and maybe paint the suspension parts white or black or get them chromed, need some stuff to break up the red, but bright red does NOT equal street rod...

I see your point, there are just a lot of older builds local which are red on red with mags that are not really HAMB friendly and thats not the look Im after - but with such a bright red ch***is .................... :)
