Kirk, I love your car; everything about it - except the tailights. They are just too hodgepodge for a car that is otherwise so well thought out. I don't know anything about 40StudeDude's kid, but I think that maybe he should be given a shot at coming up with with something that matches the car's stupendous appearance. Just my two cents.

man that thing is beautifu. i am not a huge fan of the taillights though. i think if the white plastic was red or clear it would look a lot better. but thats just my opinion. you guys have created an insane car, im sure you can figure out something to blow us all away with on the taillights. good job!!!!

Looks killer, man. The taillights are cool, but I agree with trying a Lee type lens...

Not much you can do now with the tail lights, other then blue dots or if you have an extra roof star put that on the tail light or a roof star and a blue dot.
heres what I did 49 ford with blue dot

I gotta weigh in on the negative side on those taillights!

If you absolutely must put something on them, how about one of those little chrome gunsight looking things that are on the 'C' pillar in the center of each lens?

That would repeat that little detail at the back of the car.

    Just a thought.

    Kirk,

I've been following this since the first coat of paint was laid on, and that car is simply beyond words. Stunning. But since you asked, those taillight lenses look like something from the ugly custom thread, and are positively not appropriate for a car as well thought out as this one. I know a guy who uses clear red lucite for custom tails, and backs them with a piece of clear diffuser from an industrial flourescent light fixture. The effect is sparkly and deep, very kustom and very tasteful. I think a pair of these, maybe with a blue dot (as it would fit the theme) would be a huge improvement.

I think the taillights look great when they are lit up. Problem is,they aren't gonna be lit up when it's parked and being judged. I like the idea of some blown glass ones or the other idea of the chrome star from the c-pilar. Maybe a 2" chrome bullet, the 1"shorties. Just don't think those go with the quality of the rest of the car.

    Love the car.

    Love the paint.

    Love the stripes and trim.

Dislike the lights, though they do look ULTRA cool when on.

I think the white part of them needs to go. I agree with the statement above that red or clear would be ok, but the white cross effect from a little distance looks distracting as hell. I would prefer Lee lens or something equally smooth looking, or a totally clear torpedo, or maybe chrome. White doesn't look right to me.

First time I saw the grille, it's perfect! You're a monkey with one sweet car!

On the tailights, they look pretty cool when they are lit up but not so good not lit up (which is how they will be most of the time).

They have that "stuck on" look to them. As cool as the rest of the car is, I'd say some understated tailights would fit just fine. Maybe some red handblown glass from a stained glass shop cut to fit.

My back hurts looking at Alex and his people working away on that Ford. I bet their backs are SCREAMING!

Man, the striping pulls those panels together with the base. Looks great!

Take the stock lenses and sand them flat, then glue clear plex on top (use that stuff with the needle applicator that seeps in between plastic) and then sand a nice convex crown from one end to the other, polish, done.
Oh, then you could etch "Mystical Fantasy" in the lenses, make sure to use "My pretty pony" script. Oh yeah.......

We must be on the same waves!!!!
If Kirk didn't say he was gonna compete for Custom of the year, then I would say leave them. But most judges are dicks and I bet they wouldn't like them. It's not as if they are gonna say "turn your lights on please...".

Yeah, but just because something was done "back then"....doesn't mean it LOOKS right on every car and that "we" must adhere to EVERY traditional way.....WAY too many customs had excessive adornments which TOOK AWAY from the overall presentation....OVERDONE just to outdo the next guy.
    This car doesn't NEED it....
Tailights or no taillights...the car fucking rules....

As excited as I was about seeing the taillights on the car....I don't know? First reaction....I wasn't that thrilled. Look GREAT lit but a little gaudy unlit. Read through the thread and then went back and liked them a little better. I think not having the bumper on the back makes them way to overpowering. THEY are the focus of the entire rear end. I think (hope) that with the bumper installed, they will settle into their proper perspective.
They ARE original NOS Lee Plastics lenses. Evil's post of the A Bros cars sort of supports the 60's style.
Kirk.......bottom line? It's YOUR car. YOU need to be happy with it. The car is SO clean, you need to follow YOUR "vision."

My opinion probably isn't worth much compared but I agree with Sinister on this one.
I love the car and the way it is, the grill is killer the complete paint job is awesome but I don't care for the taillights...Don't hate me its just an opinion

Everyone knows it's HIS car,so let that go. He asked for opinions,so give them!!!
I think,Kirk, you have to ask yourself "do the lenses meet the goal I had in mind for the car?". Sometimes you find a part and think, man that's cool, but later realize they don't flow. If this is one of those instances, rethink your choice. Now i'm not saying I don't like them, but would you want those taillights to be the reason you don't meet your goal?
