I have been looking for a drivers side door for my 30 project for some time now. Like most of you, when I drive thru the country side I am always scouting the landscape. <O I was with my 10 year old son heading back home from a Cub Scout event outside of town when I yelled Whoa! and scared my boy. What I saw was a Model A Sedan body out in a pasture under an oak tree. There had to be a good door there somewhere. </O A month later I took my motorcycle out in search of the owner of the land and the car. When I knocked on the door, I was quickly told by the wife that the car was not for sale. I asked about the door that I needed. She went in and got her husband. We started talking about cars, and old stuff. Joe is his name and he is 73. He bought the sedan body about 30 years ago and was holding onto in case... We have all heard this story... He has an extensive antique tractor collection and more restoration projects than you could imagine. To make a long story short, we talked for 2 1/2 hours about his collections. I offered him some cash for the sedan. He said he would not sell it, but would trade it for a Model A truck cab. I looked everywhere, and found one, called him and offered to trade. (Short version) he called back a week later and said he would just sell me the sedan body. My HAMB Handel: When I 1st got started with my '30 Sedan project, I was told it was a '29. Elrod suggested I sign up here and I did... "29Jay" I quickly learned I had a '30 instead of a '29. I guess I have come full circle. It was ment to be. <O></O> Now I have to figure out how to sell the 30 and make room for the 29<O</O
Thanks man. You can't even see the 'real" cool stuff in that pick... I'll put some more up when i dump them off the camera.
I'm trying to put up a bigger pick of the "art" and the view off to the right... Still learn'n bout the bucket...
Awesome. I count at least four John Deere small Model L tractors which are very, very rare and very, very collectable. Any other tractors ?? Any of them for sale ?? Great story, great pictures.
My story was the short version... Getting this car took me about 3 months of staying after it... According to his son, who was there the day I picked up the sedan, Joe has not sold anything in over 8 years. The way the son told it was only every now and then did he let something go. Joe says one day there will be an auction... he wants a ride in the ole hot rod when i get her done, so i promissed to take it back by. they asked me to saty in touch with them. I plan to take my boys by to see all of his tractors soon. I will take some more pictures when I go.
I told him i would come back for it as soon as i refilled my cash box... He laughed... I wanted them both real bad... Only $$$ for the sedan and i was glad to get it. For your crowd, he has a fully restored ch***is with a running banger. That is what he wants the pick up cab for... I hope i still build stuff when i'm 73... He is my longterm insperation.
Forget the A's, you've hit the mother load of John Deere LA's. They don't take up near as much room in the garage.
I think I've turned over a new leaf when the sight of a tractor gets my heart beating faster and harder then a pic of a model A. That's INSANE! I want one/any war tractor that came with metal wheels instead of rubber tires.............hell at this rate I need another damn tractor like I need another damn Pontiac. . . . . But tractors are smaller and take up less room and they work on the ranch unlike my other junk that SITS on the ranch.
Motor should be done by the weekend..... I am hopeful to have mounts made too... Once that is done (this weekend or next) I will post pics of a roller w/ an engin in it... Get'n closer.....
That looks like a certain place I know of about 5 minutes from my shop in Azle. I've been drooling at that stuff for about 12 years now.
I read your build, awesome build and an awesome car. In the process I followed your link and read this as well which leads me to ask, did you get back and give the old guy a ride? Nothing like a great ending to an awesome story. Thanks for sharing.
