Typically, yes, they are the same axles. The only main difference I found with my axle was the different spindles between the AA and the A. The axle was identical, and I've got '46 Ford 1/2 ton spindles on mine, which will be running a set of disc brake adapters from Speedwaymotors.com

lay down the the crack pipe. modern ifs on an A especially if if its fender less should get you hit with the ugly stick since thats what you are doing to that poor pickup. just because something is free or cheep doesn't mean you should use it. that being said juice spindles arnt that hard to find or you can get them new as well as the brake parts. and good drum setup doesn't cost any more that a good complete disk kit

Do you build jalopies here? Some one should make a journal about jalopies and call it, "The Journal about cars that are old and unreliable" or perhaps simply, "The Jalopy Journal." According to Wikipedia, you could also interchange, "Jalopy Journal" with "RDt Rod Journal."

I don't think the founding fathers of this website were as uptight as some would have us believe they were. Relax. It's the Jalopy Journal's forum not the "Pebble Beach Hot Rod Concours d' Elegance Journal."

By the way, if Pebble Beach can accept Hot Rods, why can't Hamb accept rDt rods?

    jalopy
    noun
a car that is old and unreliable; "the fenders had fallen off that old bus" [syn: bus]

I think we need to start a thread to settle once and for all the meaning of the phrase "rat rod". Or we can just do it here since we have already gotten started.
Can someone delete the OP's question so we don't get off topic?

OK just to clarify, from this post out, this is the the original, definitive thread to clarify the term "RAT ROD" and after we are done posting 57 pages we shall sticky this thread so that all who dare question the meaning of "Rat Rod" can open this thread and engage in a internet battle to the death.

Also everyone must save this thread to link to any other threads that may bring this question up.

One last thing. That picture of that "rat rod" that FLH posted made me (drum roll please) THROW UP IN MY MOUTH A LITTLE. (yeah, I sad it. your just mad because you wanted to.)

LETS GET READY TO (ciber) RUMBLE!!!!!!!

Some of you new guys read too much ol' school rodz ****,,,building a car or truck for shock value is not traditional,,,

I have seen a model A "rat rod",,that had no rear springs,,,the axle was welded to the frame,,,open drive without any floor board,,and 2 child safty seats st****d in the back within inches of the drive shaft.

This idiot was puting his familys life in jeporday,,,not to mention everybody else!

And as it has been pointed out on more than one occasion,,,the HAMB ain't about rat rods,,,,HRP

It ain't traditional but it is still used under cars that have fat fenders ,,,meaning it dosen't stand out like a sore thumb.

The Hamb has been around a long time and it's ok to have your own opinion,,,but when you ask a question here and don't get the responce you what to hear,,,don't get you big boy ******* in a wad,,,, HRP

I have a few rods and I'm looking to build a custom soon.
I really don't care what adjective you place in front of "rod" or "custom".

To me it's pretty simple. Rod or custom.

These two catagories are distinctly different, yet they can overlap.

Why do you have to have more catagories then that?

Street rod, hot rod, rat rod, blue rod, POS rod, limp rod.....wtf????
    Mild custom, extreme custom, wild....etc....

What ever happened to respecting someones "ride" (dare I add another overall catagory???) and what they've done to it.

Seems to me that some people that are wrapped up in labels are those that are uncomfortable with themselves and their own ideas, opinions, and efforts and they have to find acceptance from the "m***es" by drawing such dividing lines like "this is a rat rod and that isn't.....so "your wrong!!!"".

The funny and ironic thing is that I personally (and many of you out there) enjoy seeing something that someone poured all of their ability in to create the best ride that they can. There are an incredible amount of examples of this, like the guy overseas that turned a sedan into a 36 ford 3w that's in the mags. Wow. and **** from the South Omaha Turds that's building a rod from scratch that represents some time in history. Wow!

    Adjectives, labels, names......whatever.

Did you buy it that way? Did you build it? Do you drive it daily? or Do you just wash it and roll it back onto the trailer? ........whatever.

Outside of working in my garage and hang'n with other guys that love this car-thing-hobby-way-of-life that I enjoy, I love the feeling of going to a store or wherever and seeing a rod or custom parked in the parking lot.

    Wow. Someone drove their ride.

Their enjoying it and they are willing to share it by bring it out, driving it and (dare I say) risking that someone may come up and touch it. I don't care what the ride looks like. I respect that and it makes me feel good.

Think about the poor guy with a wrecked 32 ford roadster that someone hit. (described elsewhere on this board.) Man, I can't imagine how he feels and I wouldn't feel any different if it was a Packard.

Like my ride, don't like my ride, like what I say, don't like what I say....I don't really care.

Enjoy the hobby and respect others doing the same.....that I care about.

That's then end of this mornings coffee induced rant.

    Have a nice day!!!

rats are for the lazy kiddies that want to be cool, and traditional rods are for
the people stuck in older era and street rods are for the rich losers and hot rods are the same in my book, shiny ****.

now, the only car i believe in is the one you like, not cause people like it but that YOU like it, i dont care what it is, and go ahead and label your pinto a
street rod, im fine with that, its an opinion, we all have em, we all hate the other guys opinion, hell's bell, i say if you wanna build a rat go ahead, ride in cheep ****, not my life, hell put you family in it, one less crowd in line.

NO im not rambling im just trying to make about as much sense as you guys are. NO im not crazy.... ok.. ya got me there.. just ignore me...
i dont know what im saying... damn.. all this typing in making my nose sore... mabey the nurse will loosen my jacket today..... hmmmm..

Wikipedia? You mean the publically edited Dictionary?

    ...not exactly the authority.

This is a Traditional Hotrod board.

    Traditional does not equal ratrod.

Below are 2 cars. One is a ratrod. The other is a Traditional Hotrod. Can you guess which one is which?

    The difference is self-evident.

You are correct... Are you implying that I stated that they were not rats?

Allow me to give you an update:

  19. Funny how no matter how often the "R" word shows up, and we know it's just gonna be drama, so many(including me) look. Like a car wreck, I guess.

either you get it or you don't. it's like describing the difference between a "****" and "****". One's art, one's ****. You know what it is when you see it....

I wonder if people just used the search feature if you could find all the previous "rat rod fights" and just read those and avoid new ones...

Huh???? The FIRST one you posted, you implyed that it's a rat.....but maybe, just maybe it's just not done yet.....:)
There is a difference between the 1st one you post and the OSR, spiderweb clad, skull engulfed, black/red shock/rat rods......

    BTW....I really dig the Thottler's cars.....even if they aren't 100% trad....:D

    Most get DELETED......hahahaha.....

Traditional cars are in the works.

I feel that when someone calls my truck or car a rat rod its a compliment , and some people call it a hot rod. My rides are solid and safe, they just aren't your flashy typical hot rods, does that make them bad ? Growing up people that built dangerous, not well built cars . those were called piles of sh%t. How about we go back to calling them that and settle this. Times are changing and so is the lingo
