Somebody was telling me today he wouldn't own another TREMEC 5-speed because they are objectionally noisy....lots of gear noise, he said. Anyone out there using one and what's your experience?
I had a TKO500 in a Mustang and it was pretty vocal, everyone I have ever heard has been, it's not overbearingly noisy, just a little bit.
I have a 3550 in my '39 . I am running a 351 windsor engine. The Tremec is not noisy at all. Lots of fun to drive.
I got a later T-5 (don't know if it's a Trmec or still a BW) in my '31 it humms a bit (about the same volume as the road noise). I have been told they vary alot depending on what you feed them for lube (brand, synthetic VS non, etc). Makes me wonder if the other Tremecs have the same issue (as I have heard they are loud, and that they are not from different people).
Most will be a bit noisy........we generally run a full synthetic oil in em........somewhat better after that.........but they will NOT stand much abuse or horsepower. M.
The T5 built by BW are a bit noisy (and will not take much abuse like speed shifting), the T5 from Tremec and TKO500/600 are a little quieter, and MUCH stronger. I run a 600 behind a 427 and have had zero problems with a lot of abuse like drag launches on slicks and speed shifting.
If you can hear your gears your exhaust isn't loud enough! T-5's and T-56's aren't Lexus quiet but I've never heard anyone have a serious complaint about it. Certainly lots quieter than a straight cut 4-speed.
I have a Tremec TKO 600 and it shifts smooth and I cannot hear any noise at all. My exhaust and gear drive make some noise that probably drowns out some tranny noise. I use GM syncromesh trans oil as recomended.
