Heads, how to get from New Jersey to Cali?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by DocWatson, Mar 26, 2008.

  1. Ok guys, I need to know how I would get a set of heads from New Jersey to Cali without costing me the earth! Im having some heads ported and built for my Nailhead and need to get them to where they can be shipped to Oz.
Should I buy a $50 dollar set in the US and have them shipped to NJ and then on to Cali?
Should I buy the $375 guaranteed good set he has, get them ported then work out how to get them to me?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Doc.

    I have a head ache.

DHL has good shipping rates on heavy items like heads and they have equally as fast transits times as UPS or FedEx.

Go to www.DHL.com and you can set up an account to use a credit card with. I have shipped a set of heads that weighed 105 lbs. about the same distance across country from Washington to North Carolina for about $60 USD.

Make sure you get the heads packaged up into one box. This is how I did it and that is what saves on shipping cost. If you ship them in two boxes, then it will cost you closer to $90 or $100.

Weird idea... but if any HAMBer is flying to Australia from the US, and has some extra luggage room, AND Doc can find someone on the other end to help them through customs (lugging luggage with nailhead heads is probably anti-fun)...

Just an idea... but the power of the HAMB has amazed me before...

I would say just to buy his set and work them back to you. Where is he Cali? At the very worst at least your only paying shipping one way. Sometimes it makes sense to spend the money rather than deal with the aggrivation. So you save an extra $100, not a huge deal for trying to relay the heads west and then back to you.

Check with airline freight companies. I shipped a 70 pound dog with Delta Air Freight once for something like $60. I don't know if you could ship to Anchorage and then to Australia through Evergreen.

Might even see if there's someone in Cali near where you're having the heads done that would pick them up, and then stick them into a suitcase or proper shipping box and bring them over as extra luggage. Try an adverti*****t on Craigs List in that area....

    Just thoughts....

  7. The place they are being built is in New Jersey! I did buy his heads, at least I know that they are good and I wont be looking for another!

I don't know about the heads but you have several choices on shipping them.
UPS, FEDEX or USPS. They would have to be shipped individually if they 50 lbs each.
There is also the choice of having them shipped by freight truck.

FEDEX has an LTL service, if the head guy would strap them to a pallet, and bring it to the terminal, they transport pretty cheap. I paid 80$ for a 100 lb pallet w/ a trans to go from Indiana to joisey.

    In regards to your question about a finned alloy oil pan for nailhead, I am not aware of any aftermarket ones ever having been built. I've been looking at nailhead stuff on e-bay, never seen anything like that. Closest MIGHT be a boxy aluminum unit built for boat use, kind of like a big box. IF the aftermarket ever made one. I have one for an early Cadillac, so it would not surprise me to find out some were built for buicks. A fellow in B.C., Canada just cast up some finned valley covers ( I bought one, nice work!! ), and someone mentioned to him that he ought to consider doing the finned oil pan. Might want to do a search, contact him, and see how many confirmed"ssaaaadddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

Sorry about the above, fell asleep at the keyboard!!! "... see how many confirmed advanced orders it would take for him to do it. Be pretty pricey though, i think.

If you're going to ship them through a regular ground service (FedEx, UPS, or DHL) it might be cheaper to pack and send them seperate. With the pair coming in at 100 lbs., I'd think that would be A LOT more because of their weight limits, etc.
If they were package properly in one container, could you use Greyhound? A lot of HAMBers swear by them for large heavy stuff on the cheap. Good luck.
