Since I'm aquiring a 2 door Mercury Monterey in the next few days,I was wondering, what's the difference between the Monterey Custom 2 door sedan,Custom 2 door hardtop, and the regular 2 door hardtop...I asked the guy I'm getting it from for the VIN so I can decode it..I did find out it has the 352 with Merc-O-Matic 2 speed auto trans..

Well, from what little I know/remember....the 2 spd was usually behind the Y block. The 352 should have the cruiseomatic or whatever the 3 speed-o-matic is called.

The custom is a trim package, and as far as I know your car should have a little rectangular piece of trim just ahead of the wheelwell on the fender.

I just PMed you, and you are probably replying now, but yeah you are the 2nd person on Earth, oh wait, 3rd, who actually owns one of those oddballs. There was my car, which I butchered and sent to Ohio to Punkabilly1306 instead of just crushing it haha, and a local guy in South Jersey in the Deadbeaters has one.

Custom series cars had more trim inside and out than the regular Monterey series did.

Well from my knowledge, the difference between the sedan and the hardtop is a b-pillar and as far as the Custom, that should just be trim. And yes, 2 speed transmissions were stock and the 3 speed was an option.

I actually just got this car a little bit ago. I bought it from the second owner and it only has 121K on it. When I got it, they said it has been sitting for 5-6 years because of a brake problem and all it would need is a tune up and a trans flush along with addressing the brake problem. Well I got into it and found every intake push rod bent in the engine and the trans case broke in half near the front band! So I just rebuilt the 352 and put another 3 speed trans in it to get it on the road. Unfortunately I don't have any extra parts, but keep an eye on eGay as lenses do float around there every once and a while.

Haha Bob I took like 2.5 coils outta each side or some stupid amount. The car just rides around on the bumpstops. Rode like shit....looked great tho!

And father time did a great job lowering that thing, no blocks, a helper spring per side and it is STILL low!

    Nice 62 man!

I decoded the vin..It's a 2 door hardtop with a 352 and built in the Los Angeles assembly plant..Number 507740 in the consecutive order..Now I just need the rest off of the tag so I can find out what trans and gearing ration it has..The guy is also giving me an extra Merc-O-Matic that was good when pulled out of his buddy's car during a swap, and a 460 with a C6..Might trade off the motor and trans for some work on it..Need the spot above the windshield patched from passenger side to driver side...Might look for a butchered one in a local junkyard and cut that section out if it's solid and weld it into mine..It also has a brake problem..The pedal has to be pressed to the floor to get it to stop...Other problem is the Merc-O-Matic that's in it now makes a minor noise,so I might swap the extra one in(depending on condition) and trade off the other one for some other work on the Monterey..

A quick way to tell which transmission came in the car is to look at the shift indicator. It's going to be one of the two below:[IMG]
As far as your drivetrain plans keep in mind something. With my rebuilt and tuned 352 2 barrel and 3 speed Merc-O-Matic trans, I get 10 miles/gallon. That's not of the freeway, but just over my daily trips. Regardless, it sounds like you got a pretty good deal.

I'm working with the owner to put a customer's '62 Monterey Custom convertible (352-2V, Merc-O-Matic) back together after an engine fire. I've been able to source a lot of stuff from Mercuryland in Nebraska. Good luck with your project.

  25. i have a '62 monterey 4 door, not sure the of the model.....my lower quarter trim doesnt use screws, i will try to crawl underneath and let you know if it is clips or whatever...alot of parts for these cars are interchangable with the same year galaxie.

mine also came with a radar from the '60's

Anyone know if the roof line of the '62-'64 Galaxie is identical to my Monetery? If soo,I can find one at the local junkyard with a good roofline area that I can cut out for a patch panel..Keeps it all FoMoCo that way. Also,is the 352 in my Merc the same as the 352 they used for the Ford pickups??

From your previous pics of the rust in your roof, I don't think it would be worth the time/money to cut that piece out of another roof. It appears you can get away with replacing the metal between the drip rail and the style line. Use that style line as your weld location to make it easier to metal work and hide the joint. Just get some 18 gauge sheet and go to town. I wouldn't recommend cutting the entire piece out at once, rather do small sections at a time to keep things located. As far as the engine, they should be the same.
