Hand made trophies are awesome, but for the love of God, how do you take a 4 ft tall trophy home in a roadster or one the size of a bread loaf on a bike?

I think the home made ones can be fun. Especially if some thought is put into interesting categories, but that said, the show we put on never has prizes. It's about the people as much as the cars as far as I'm concerned. We want cool people to come out to have a good time not win something.

I hate shows where people just come look at the cars then leave. I want to hang out and have a kick *** party that happens to be even cooler because of the fact that everyone is in a *****in car.

After I wrote that I remembered the sweet *** trophy I got at last year's Magneto's show. [IMG]

Anyone know if they're having there show again this year? I still haven't seen anything on it and the website is still listing 2007's info.

The problem is that our society has got to the point they reward people just for showing up. They start with our kids and keep on going all the way through till they go out on their own. Can't run, can't catch , too lazy to even try? Here have an award for showing up. Then later on these kids become adults who feel they are owed recognition. Awards can be a good thing, in small doses and if you deserve it.

I've watched the local parking lot shows give away way to many trophies for the number of cars they have attending. Basicly everyone gets a award. Then when these people go to a real show where their craftsmanship and skill has to compete to get recognition, they throw a fit. I also own a trophy shop and I'll have customers look at me like I'm nuts when I try to talk a first timer from over doing it with the awards. They usually buy too many anyway. Not that I argue with them much anyway. I got bills to pay.

When we go to shows, I usually throw my judging sheet away. What do I need with a trophy? When I hear some guy complaining about not winning, I give him my card and tell him I'll build him whatever he wants for the right price.

If you don't win enough trophies, how are you gonna know when you are officially a Gold Chainer?

We have a show locally that is a benefit, it's called 'Valey Trash' (long story short, politicians is Ignant). All the trophys there are hand made, I would rather have one of those than 10 of the ones from other shows.

I think the value of a trophy is solely dependant on the location of the show and the participants at the show. I used to chair a local town car show until I was pretty much demoted for not p***ing out enough trophies. I guess people weren't there to have fun, they came to win trophies!

I am all about the movement towards homemade trophies. I can really appreciate the time and creativity that goes into them (not them I'm sure some real trophy builders aren't creative...). However having said that I know it never would have flown at the local show that had everything from Model Ts to street rods to Novas to our traditional rods.

I could give a ****, mainly cuz I'll never win one LOL but you know if I did it would be so unexpected it would be really cool. I'd be so frickin proud to get best beater or something like that. It's recognition from your peers, and that's a big deal.

I'd prefer a pinstriped can of Krylon any day to a plastic trophy wtih the gold lady.

That said, they're *mandatory* to get the cars. The high zoot (and some cars are reallly neat)crowd demands trophys, and won't show up if you're not ginving them away. Like it or not that's how it is. And people in general like to see fancy schmancy show cars. They bring in the crowds.

Not to mention isn't it traditional? How long has the GNRS been going on? I dunno it also just makes the show more official if you have them, and its expected.

Some shows just aren't like that, I've caught a few in the midwest and tehy usually had something like $1 beeer from a cooler and cars people drove, and even fancy musclecars that they dared to cut up and modify like the drivers they were. Just a different vibe. Plus, any carshow at the VFW is a good one in my opinion. :D Not to digress.

Exactly. Not that I don't care, but local shows or cruise nights that hand out trophies left and right are meaningless.

Lets give everyone a trophy so they dont cry... ********- some people ar meant to cry some people are meant to smile. I regard rewards that carry merit, such as winning at Amelia Island, Eyes on Design, Glenmoor, etc. shows that people actually enjoy themselves and have a reason to win an award while doing so.

The first award I ever got was at High School Nationals at Norwalk in 1997. I got "Best Appearing Car" out of 700+ racers - AND I was also the quickest. :D That meant something so it was cool.

Depends on what side of the fence your on. The promoter MIGHT need them to get cars through the gate. In that case put on a show that you have to turn people away even if you don't give out trophys. Hard, but when t happens a dash plaque is reward enough.
From the participants side it depends on how secure you are with who you are and how satisfied you are with your ride. For myself I couldn't imagine getting a trophy or not having any reflection on how I enjoyed the event. An event to me is the people the location and most of all the ride to and from. I probably haven't a clue as to what a car is for but my dad used to say "It's for geting from A to B and hopefully back to A if that's your destination".

I am a member of a new club THE JALOPY KINGS here in South Dakota and we are hosting our own show this year at the local dragstip and we are going to have trophies but no cars with numbers on them and our trophies will be made by a select artistic group of out members. Its not needed but it is fun when you actually put some soul and personality into it. Its hard in our area because alot of the local shows are not that way and there are alot of trophy goers here... We are trying to change that one show at a time

They may be necessary to some but not to me. I've always said that I wash my trophies off in between trips. You know, the trophies that have wings and splatter on your grille and windshield. If I go to Knoxville in May and bring back some Knoxville bugs then those are my trophies. Means I got there and back.
We have a local guy around here who makes money off of shows. He finds a charitable group trying to raise money. He owns a trophy business. He gets the 20 - 25 buck entry fee, makes the trophy for less than 10 and says his charity is the fact that he allows the group trying to raise money to have the concession stand. If most of you are like me you usually bring your refreshments with you to a show. Example: Our High School Band was raising money to go to Disney World to be in the parade. He got with them, put on a show gave them the concessions. When I found this out I gave the Band my 25.00 entry fee and did not register for the show. They made around 200.00 for the whole day at a show that registered around 75 cars/trucks. That just sux.
He now has "Hall of Fame" shows. Where if you attend X amount of his shows you "always" will "win" a trophy.
I know its a rant so I'll just say thats my 4 cents worth.

If it costs $65 to get in, and it's not a charity, I want at least $50 in tee shirts for my wardrobe for free :p

Maybe if they didn't all look the same, but some people think volume is better than quality.

  21. All of the shows I attend nowadays are no-trophy.
That because I usually leave early.

My pals been helping a guy with a 46 Ford coupe.
An old build his dad started years ago.
Out with the SBF and in with the SBC.
The SBC cuz he had a good one from a previous car.

Anyway, the car is barely driveable, kind of a self powered roller right now.
He was at the last car show I attended, trailered the coupe out there and drove to the parking area.

As noted, I left early and didn't get to see the trophy presentation.
I heard later he won the trophy for 'best windows."

    Say what?

Then they tell me he has no gl*** in the car at all.

    The light dawneth.

I don't do many shows, just a few good ones with my friends.
Kinda hard to make myself pay $20. to sit around in the hot desert sunshine all day.
More fun to drive the roadster over, park it elsewhere, walk the show and visit.

Shoulda done that on the last one . . . 105 during the day.
I'm little crazy and every once in a while it comes out.

Imo and in my life the only trophies that ever meant anything were my first one from a local soapbox derby that allowed dads to help.
Dad and I - dad did 90% + on it and I was the go-fer - turned out a tube framed, aluminum bodied car and he made everything including brakes, wheels and tires.
It was a helluva little car, looked very much like a 30's era Indy racer.
    Still got that trophy.

A few drag race trophies which mean a lot.
Got a couple of those left.

It's very much the old story about the green flag and the BS.

If you don't get there first, it don't matter who you know....

I go for the cars and the camraderie

I could care less about the trophies, but the hand-made ones are the best!

    I saw a lady take a picture of our '50Burb - THATS the only appreciation I "need":D

Naturally this is a no win thread and commentary. There are those that only go to car shows to get that trophy. There are those that could care less. I am amazed, not that many here don't care, but that they bad mouth those that do. Live and let live, man.
I helped with a local High School show for a few years. It raised money for the Music Dept and I organized and led the judges. The first year we had all these cl***es, you know the usual Best Tri Five, Best Open 32-34, that kind of nonsense. It took way too long to try and judge 300 cars and yes a bunch of people *****ed. The following years I changed it to Killer Flames, Most *****in, Long & Low, Hottest Hot Rod, etc. This way some guys with a pretty good sense of it all could pick the cars and honestly no one *****ed. It was a win win, lots of trophies for those that care and good bucks raised for the music program! Trophies are what bring many cars to these local fund raiser's.
One other thing I have noticed, there are tons of car shows here in So Cal. I will see the same trophy hounds at all the little weekly or small car shows trying for that chunk o plastic. But when it comes to a big show, like say the Grand National, they are no where to be seen. Why? cuz they know their car really isn't that nice but somehow need the validation of winning a trophy on Friday night.
Personally I don't really care nor does it bother me. I have quite a few 1st place trophies from biggies like the GNRS but the ones that really mean something are like the Bob McCoy "Real Hot Rod" award that was an original painting by Bob and is like 3 feet square! (If you don't know who bob is, goggle him). It hangs proudly in my house!

When there is thought and they are hand build they are great. When they have purpose and match what the catagory is for they are even better.
