Im healing from an eye injury myself I had something sneak under my full-face shield a couple of weeks ago. I didnt get the eye dremal instead I got a hold real still as the dock pulled out a hypodermic needle and preceded to pick at my eye. This was followed by a knarly and pointy pare of tweezers to clean up the loose skin created by the needle. Its kept me out of the garage for the last week and a half. Im just starting to get back into things. Its been slow to heal because I keep loosing the eye scab due to dry eyes, very time the scab comes off it has to start the healing process over. What frustrates me is I have tried to take precautions but stuff keeps on sneaking in my eyes. this is my 3rd time. Anyone have any recommendations on eye protection especially for people who wear gl***es? Chris
I did some construction with a guy who had a gl*** eye when I was a young man. He lost it working on his truck. I've worn safety gl***es religiously since.
Same thing happened to me 2 month ago. I optimistically thought the metal splinter would come out over time. The opposite seems to happen in the eye. The doctor was pissed, for me, not coming in earlier. It took him 45 minutes with some metal spear thing, to get it out. Now, I wear gl***es, even while I'm looking at the HAMB, not taking any risks anymore.
when grinding or cutting or whatever, dont use those stupid *** safety gl***es, remember those tight fitting clear goggles we all hat to where in science cl*** during those ****py *** experiments that no one ever got right? where those, or somthing similar.. nothing can get in ... unless it gets some real speed up.. but then your screwed anyways.
I use to not wear saftey gl***es until a guy asked me if i had a girlfriend I replied "YES" he then asked me if my girlfriend would like a one eyed boyfriend. Been wearing my gl***es since.10 years no eye injurys.
I tried wearing the chemist style goggles even under a face shield but they fog up so bad water vapor condenses on the inside, you need windshield wipers on em to see
Thanks...alittle late....I just splashed ****ing brake cleaner in my eye today. I was cleaning the heads on my shovelhead over a bucket...sad thing is my safety gl***es were sitting about a foot from my face! Guess that was a foot too far huh? Damn that **** burns!!! Luckily I was close to the head and found a faucet to rinse quickly.
These are fun at parties, but the other 300+ days a year they pretty much ****!!! Take it from me - get some GOOD eye protection and USE IT!!!!
Man I love these safety tips......I am in charge of the BBS program at work and I always share your hurts with my crew.
I'm on borrowed time with the eye thing. I've been to the emergency room no less that 2 dozen times in my life and 1/2 of those have beeen for steel or some other foreign matter in my eye. I'm one to wear eye protection 98% of the time and it's always that 2% that gets me. You know, just the quick grind job to take off that rough edge. It gets me every time. I've also had a few ricochet pieces get me while I was wearing protection. Bottom line, safety gl***es and face shield EVERY time your in the presence of a piece of rotating equipment. Frank
My right eye seems to be magnetic....3 time over the course of 15 years, without gl***es the first time, with the next two times. I just work with my eyes squeezed shut at all times now, and that goes along way to explaining the **** that rolls out of my shop.
Good to hear you made it through ok. Rust ring. Been there. I was porting a Ford FE 390 head WITH pretty good goggles on. One of the slivers bounced off my cheek, under the safety gl***es, and into my eye. It stuck in my cornea. It didn't hurt too much at first. Later the pain grew. Magnets didn't work. Every time I blinked it dug in a bit. The doctor got it out pretty easily. It was in only a few hours, but a rust ring had already started -- fortunately not long enough to need the Dremel. After a few weeks I went in to check it out and the rust ring had worn off. I had radial keratotomy 20 year ago to correct nearsightedness, so I'm familar with fiddling on my cornea. Anyway, my message here is to think about a full face shield in addition to your safety gl***es because those little metal bits can sometimes outsmart your goggles.
The face shield is the way to go when using the old cut off wheel when those things break they will do a number on your face.
I had the exact thing happen to me but it took 6 days before I got "iritis." The worst part of it all (besides the procedure of having it removed) is that I got the metal in my eye while wearing safety gl***es and a clear plastic face shield. Just some bad bad bad luck I guess.
Wear them tight fitting swimming goggles under whatever your wearing...who cares what you look like...I am already funny looking so I do not worry too much..........Funny thing is I have something in my eye right now.........I was wearing my swimming googles under my normal gl***es and a face shield...no problem....finished the grinding task removed shield and swimming gl***es continued to work, at some point touched my head with my hand and something found my eye via metal in my hair..........grinding is a tough gig be careful out their.........Littleman
About ten years ago I lost the sight in my left eye due to a blood clot. At least it took something I had two of and not something I only had one of. Here comes the stupid part. Last year I used the wire wheel to just knock some dirt off of a bolt head. I thought I got some dirt in my eye, the one that works, but after a couple of days I went to the doctor. There was a piece of wire sticking in my eyeball. There is a difference between having something in your eye and having something sticking in your eye. As the doctor pulled on the wire and the tweezers slipped off several times he made it clear that I had already used my visual spare. Wear eyes protection. When you're down to eye protection be damn careful! Is this the blind guy smile?
Man this subject always gives me the heebie jeebies and reminds me how much I need to keep those gl***es on! I had a cut off wheel blow up in my face the other day and I had my shield on , thank god. When i was pulling the many bits and pieces out of my hair and shirt I was *very* glad that I'd worn it! It was no big deal, but all that **** in my face would have been really bad without the shield.
Your very lucky the ER got it out. One time out of extreme desperation I tried the ER in early am hours only to have them not only fail to get it out but charge me $1120.00. Safety gr***es dont keep every thing out. Iv had steel in my eyes 5 times and 4 of them were with gl***es. My best advice is stay out of the line of fire (sparks ..) and if you get some go strait to a optometrist.
I had a student about 2 years ago take a wire from a wire wheel grinder to his eye. I still have the image of his eye, with that wire sticking out, stuck in my head. 2 surgeries later he has most of his vision back. Sad thing is that he lost some of his depth perception. He was a really good TIG welder, but not anymore. <O</O If you get something small in your eye that you cant flush out, go to an ophthalmologist not the ER. They have the right tools for the job. No Dremels! Of course most of them close at 5 and most of us start work on our cars around then.
no vision, no driving, no driving, NO DRIVING... ever again!! Eye protection and safety equip. should be a reflex habit, not a consideration No one in my garage works without it, just like my car doesnt move till everyone is wearing a seatbelt. Its not about looking like a wimp. Its about protecting yourself so you can drive what youre building. Just my opinion (I may be the oddball, but Ive been in the shop for 15 years, all kinds of powertools, ALWAYS wear safety protection, and never been to ER)
When I was 3 yrs old, I got in trouble for playing with a steel rod. I have been around cars, hot rods, anything that has a motor or goes fast. Anyhow I put the steel rod back on the shelf, and it rolled off. Yep you guessed it, right into my eye. Punctured it, and the fluid was lost as well. Kinda like a popped water balloon. So take a look at my pics. I Just had 3 eye surgeries since august of 2007. I could not keep an implant in anymore. I had it for 31 yrs, and now I can not have one anymore. I can still have the artificial eye, just nothing behind it, so I lose movement of my right eye. My last injury, and what caused my previous implant to rupture was being hit head on by a drunk at 10:15 AM on a weekday. The airbag ruptured my Eye's Orbit, and broke the implant loose. Scar tissue then pushed it out of my eye socket through a membrane that was holding it in. SOOOOOOOOO all this being said YES I wear a **** load of eye protection, I should probably wear it during *** too. hahaha Just kidding. I usually wear a pair of safety gl***es and a full face shield. Enjoy looking at my freakish eye. Oh yeah, That was the implant the night before I had surgery to remove it, and try to install a new one. This one was held in by some muscle that had grown to the back of the implant. 3 surgeries later i could not keep an implant in without scar tissue pushing it back out. So unless u want sum 1 digging in your eye with a really cool lil knife wear protection.I will have my new artificial eye this coming monday. Will
Yes to the full face sheild! Happened to me once when I wasn't wearing any eye protection...metal in the eye, rusted, dremmel tooled out!...1 month later when I WAS wearing eye protection, a piece bounced off my cheek below my gl***es and right into my eye! Luckily it worked its way out at the end of the day...so now...gl***es AND full face sheild!..Happy grinding!
Yea the eye thing ****s, I really recomend a good eye doctor. Mine knows me too well now. Been there about 3 times in the last 5 years. The last time I had a piece of thread in my eye!?! - yea... I dont know either. I also blow myself off really good with a small blower (Damn it, not that way people!!!). just to make sure something small on my face, or in my hair could somehow find its way to the eye.
