I tried searching and couldn't find anything. What are my options for getting discs up front with out a new subframe. I looked on speedways site and the kits are all for up to 48 fords, but none for the 49-51 mercs. Thanks in advance Robert
Really? All the big companies make kits but you have to have the spindles machined. Ive never done it but a friend did. It almost seems not worth it. The front drum brakes are huge and stop well. Fatman, Master Power, etc... My friend that did the swap was smart and bought a second set of spindles to have them sent out ahead of time, so when it came time to do the swap he had everything he needed.
no, you need a kit. But the kits upgrade you to modern balljoints and what not. Well worth the expense and time IMHO. Jamco makes a QUALITY product. You can even ship your a-arms to them and they will send them back to you ready for the granada parts.
No offense implied dude, but have you ever done the swap or owned a Merc? Ive seen the swap in a magazine and HELL NO would I go through that aggrivation to upgrade my front end. The Merc frontend doesnt ride bad at all and the brakes are nice and big. The balljoint swap is like $1k or something outrageous? Yes Im sure the Granada spindles may work after that but man before you know it you will be $2000 or better into your front end and have improved it marginally at best. Honestly, for all the work thats involved Id say just go subframe. Not all subframes have that shitty wide look, FlamedAbone on here did one that I wouldnt know isnt stock if I didnt see the tech thread about it.
none taken. Helping a buddy of mine some with the buildup of his shoebox. He has chosen to go the Jamco route. The parts came back and looked great. The quality of the work was awesome. Everything went together the way it was supposed to and was as close to a "bolt on" as you could expect. NO, its not cheap to go this route, but it does have its advantages. Jamco also sells a kit that bolts directly to your stock spindles with no modification required. The only reason I mentioned any of this at all is that he mentioned that he had already been looking at kits from speedway. It is also worth mentioning that that Stock spindle kit is priced at just a little over $500. Thats not to bad considering its all new parts, and no parts exchange. bearings/seals, hoses, calipers, discs. the whole 9 yards
I dig. But I kinda figured you were working on a shoebox, there is no similarity to the Merc when it comes to this. There is no bolt on, you have to machine your spindles which is a pain in the ass (take em off, ship em out and wait) Mercs and shoeboxes...the two cars do get grouped together a lot, but they are different animals.

Hey thanks guys. I will check out jamco and fatman. Right now I'm just looking at my options. Haven't decided if the disc change is necessary yet. I've never got to drive the car so I have no idea what it drives like is.
yes, the website is incorrect, but jamco does make a kit for the 50 merc. "hottweelz" is an alliance vendor: a.k.a. JAMCO. and they DO offer a kit for the 50 merc. It looks like the pricing may be different. I appreciate the PM though!
I had Precision Brakes Co. out of Ashland OR make some brackets for Wilwood Superlites and custom hats that mount on the backside of a stock hub. The rotors are almost 12" and they fit behind your basic 15" smoothie wheel.
I read it, but I would bet you still have to machine the spindles...just a hunch... Hey I woul definately say if you want drive the car first, I think you might be pleasantly surprised at how well it stopped. My 51 4 dr would put you through the windshield! Only thing I would recommend is swapping to a more modern master etc.
