6volt gen to 12 volt can it be done?

    getting ready to wire my car i was going to run 6 volts but now im going 12 i think my gen is 6 volt dont know for sure how can i check it with out it running? can a good electric shop rewind it for 12. thanks billy

    Yep ! Useally just change the field coils .

    pretty sure it can be done,,,there is also a company that makes an alternator in a generator case (powergen, or something like that),,,but WAY expensive............

    Just run the six volt with a regulator. Thats what i do and its a hell of a lot cheaper. but to answer question any starter shop should be able to but it aint cheap.

    thanks i feel alot better i have a buch of stuff to do not worrying about the gen and move on to more important things .billy

    Wire it to a 12 volt regulator and run it as is. The 6 volt fields are heavier than the newer 12 volt. I have ran two of these for years.

    The regulator will determine the output voltage..:)
